Through the use transfer functions, or other modeling types, directed toward the individual operation of an engine and after-treatment subsystems, an optimizer determines the trade-offs between fuel consumption, urea consumption, and reduction of NOx and PM emissions for each component of the integrated system. Evaluation of these trade-offs permits the optimizer to dictate how each component should be controlled, or adjusted, to achieve optimal fuel (and urea) consumption while meeting the constraints bounding the solution. Response characteristics can be triggered by adjusting certain engine operating levers in order to achieve optimal performance of the integrated system.

Optimized exhaust after-treatment integration

A method and system for controlling a continuously variable transmission (CVT). In one embodiment, the method includes receiving vehicle operation data. The method also includes controlling engine and transmission operations based on the vehicle operation data, fuel efficiency data, and CVT efficiency data.

Continuous variable transmission system

A method is disclosed including operations to interpret an engine load level for a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine. In response to determining the engine load level is less than 40% of a maximum engine load level, the method further includes operations to performing a first fuel injection event including less than 25% of a combustion fuel amount, the first fuel injection event occurring before 10 degrees after top dead center (TDC), to perform a second fuel injection event including between 15% and 65% of the combustion fuel amount, the second fuel injection event occurring after 10 degrees after TDC, and to perform third fuel injection event comprising between 10% and 85% of the combustion fuel amount, the third fuel injection event occurring before 63 degrees after TDC.

Emissions reductions through multiple fuel injection events

The present invention provides an internal combustion engine system that includes an internal combustion engine system includes an internal combustion engine having an intake manifold fluidly coupled to a compressor adapted to receive ambient air through an air conduit of the engine, a first sensor positioned at least one of inside and outside the air conduit and configured to measure a first water content in the ambient air, and a second sensor positioned at least one of inside the intake manifold and upstream of the intake manifold and configured to measure a second water content in the intake manifold.

Closed loop EGR control method and system using water content measurement

A method and apparatus for controlling to a target heat release rate (HRR) uses an HRR control lever, namely, pilot fuel timing and/or pilot fuel quantity, used in a gaseous-fuelled compression ignition internal combustion engine. The mechanism to control HRR to a target HRR improves engine performance and emissions. A target HRR is determined for a cycle of an engine. An HRR control lever is then used to adjust to the target HRR in consideration of combustion conditions in the engine and the difference between the target HRR and cycle HRR predicted for the cycle by reference to, by way of example, a derived HRR trace from a previous cycle, a pressure trace, a measured property of the exhaust gas directly determined or mapped values provided during calibration allowing for adjustment to a target HRR for the engine. The mapped values can be cross-referenced to engine combustion conditions.

Method and apparatus for controlling combustion quality of a gaseous-fuelled internal combustion engine

The present method and apparatus employ a signal indicative of cylinder pressure within the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine to control combustion phasing or start of combustion (SOC) in subsequent cycles of the engine where the engine is driven by combustion of both a fuel/air premixed charge and a directly injected quantity of fuel. A ratio of signals indicative of pre-combustion pressure and post-combustion pressure within a cycle are employed to estimate SOC and then, based on a predetermined target SOC, an ignition lever is employed to adjust subsequent SOC. A preferred ignition lever is, in a pilot fuel ignited engine, pilot fuel quantity.

Method and apparatus for controlling an internal combustion engine using combustion chamber pressure sensing

An internal combustion engine operable in a premixed charge compression ignition mode and a method for operating the engine, the engine including an engine body with a piston assembly, a combustion chamber formed in the engine body by the piston assembly, an intake system for delivering intake air to the combustion chamber during an intake stroke, a mixing device that mixes a first fuel with the intake air to provide a premixed charge of air and the first fuel, a direct fuel injector adapted to directly inject a second fuel into the combustion chamber, and a control system adapted to control the direct fuel injector in a manner to provide at least one early control injection, and preferably, a plurality of early control injections of the second fuel into the combustion chamber before start of combustion of the premixed charge.

Internal combustion engine operable in PCCI mode with early control injection and method of operation

A novel and improved engine and method are provided which includes a premixed charge compression ignition engine capable of operating over a wide load range without the need to vary the IMT beyond easily achievable or desirable temperature levels. The engine and method adjust the start of combustion by adjusting the engine speed and torque while delivering a targeted engine horsepower output.
