The invention relates to a process for producing a surface layer with embedded inter-metallic phases, which is distinguished by the fact that a layer comprising a metal and a ceramic is applied to a substrate element, that a reaction takes place between the metal and the ceramic of the layer as a result of energy being introduced during the application of the layer or as a result of a subsequent introduction of energy, and as a result the surface layer is produced, with inter-metallic phases being formed.

Process for producing a surface layer

The invention relates to a surface layer which comprises a plurality of layers, of which one layer is a ceramic wear-resistant layer and another layer is a transition layer to a metallic substrate element. The transition layer comprises intermetallic phases and is formed by a reaction from the materials of the substrate element and of the ceramic layer.

Surface layer and process for producing a surface layer

An inner torch for the electric-arc spraying of cavities, in particular of cylinder contact surfaces. The inner torch as at least two torch tubes for heating electrodes. Inner torch

A die provided for fixing a porous ceramic insert for producing a light metal component which is reinforced by the insert. For this purpose, the insert is positioned in the die in such a way that any force which occurs for the purpose of fixing the insert is compensated for by a collinear force, which minimizes the bending moments exerted on the insert. Furthermore, shielding elements are used to protect the insert from a casting metal flowing into the die. Furthermore, the invention describes a process in which the velocity of a casting plunger which moves the casting metal into the die is regulated in such a way that the insert is not damaged by the kinetic energy of the casting metal. This is achieved by filling the die at a low velocity until the metal has flowed around the insert. Then, the casting plunger is accelerated, thus ensuring optimum filling of the die with the casting metal.

A vehicle brake arrangement includes a packet of alternating stator brake disks and rotor brake disks that are parallel and rotatable relative to each other. Each stator brake disk includes a support ring, support arms that are circumferentially distributed about, connected to, and protruding radially from an outer circumference of the support ring, and plate-shaped brake segments respectively removably secured in segment-shaped spaces between neighboring ones of the support arms by pivotable latch bars and spring-biased catches engaging recesses of the brake segments. Each brake segment includes a plate-shaped carrier, and a brake pad adhered onto at least one major surface of the carrier. The pads are made of sintered metal and the rotor brake disks are made of a ceramic or ceramic composite. Selective frictional contact between the sintered metal brake pads and the ceramic rotor brake disks provides effective braking friction, and the brake segments are easily exchangeable.

A ceramic composite includes (a) 30 to 60% by volume of C-fibers; (b) 10 to 55% by volume of a matrix made of SiC and C, wherein the weight ratio SiC:C is in the range of between 20:1 and 2:1; (c) 5 to 40% by volume porosity that may be open or closed. A base material is formed from a)&plus;b)&plus;c). The ceramic composite also includes a protective system comprising at least one of (d) a lower protective layer that is situated directly on the base material consisting of one or more compounds comprising Si, C, B, O,and having a thickness between 20 and 150 &mgr;m; (e) a central protective layer that is situated above the lower protective layer consisting of at least one of transition metal borides and transition metal silicides in combination with SiC, SiO,or SiOC, and having a thickness of from 50 to 250 &mgr;m; and (f) an upper protective layer that is situated above the central protective layer consisting of one or more compounds comprising SiC, SiO,, MoSi,, Mo,Si, Mo,Si,, ZrB, ZrB,, ZrB,, Si,N,, ZrO,, Y,O,, Al,O,, mixed oxides Al,O,&mdash;SiO,, and SiOC and having a thickness of from 20 to 250 &mgr;m.

Ceramic composite

A tribological coating made of a copper-free highly hypereutectic aluminum/silicon alloy and/or of a copper-free aluminum/silicon composite material composed such that fine silicon primary crystals and/or silicon particles, intermetallic phases, and oxides form as hard particles during the production of the layers in the atmospheric thermal spraying method and/or are anchored in the structure. The surface of the coating can be machined economically by short-chipping using conventional tools, so that additional alloy elements such as copper for forming additional intermetallic phases such as Al,Cu can be eliminated. This is significant because conventional AlSi cylinder liners in reciprocating engines pose problems in conjunction with certain fuels because of their copper content.

Coating consisting of hypereutectic aluminum/silicon alloy and/or an aluminum/silicon composite material

A coating for a cylinder bore of a reciprocating engine with an iron, aluminum, or magnesium base comprises a hypereutectic aluminum/silicon alloy. The alloy is applied to a cylinder wall by thermal spraying.

A process for the production of sandwich structures made of fiber-reinforced ceramics, the base substance of the ceramic matrix consisting of a Si-organic polymer and a ceramic or metallic powder. A cross-linking of the Si-organic polymer takes place under increased pressure and at an increased temperature. After the joining of the facings and the honeycomb core, the sandwich structure is pyrolysed to form a ceramic material.

Process for producing sandwich structures from fiber-reinforced ceramics

A compound or composite powder which includes metallic or ceramic whiskers embedded in a metallic or ceramic matrix as host material, the whiskers have a length between 5.times.10.sup.-6 m and 2.times.10.sup.-4 m and diameters between 2.times.10.sup.-7 m and 1.times.10.sup.-5 m, and are embedded in the matrix with a volume proportion of whisker content between 1 to 50% (by volume), the reference being to a pore-free compacted compound/composite material; the whiskers being made of SiC, Si.sub.-3 N.sub.-4, Al.sub.-2 O.sub.-3 or ZrO.sub.-2 and are embedded in a ceramic matrix being Al.sub.-2 O.sub.-3, Al.sub.-2 O.sub.-3 +from 5 to 40% ZrO.sub.-2 +from 0 to 5% Y.sub.-2 O.sub.-3 or ZrO.sub.-2 with 3 to 15% Y.sub.-2 O.sub.-3 or Si-nitride or Si-carbide. Alternatively the whiskers are made of Si.sub.-3 N.sub.-4, Al.sub.-2 O.sub.-3, ZrO.sub.-2 or W and the matrix is made of W, Mo, Fe, Ni, Co, Cu or an alloy thereof.
