A liquid crystal gradient index device has two opposed substrates containing liquid crystal, a plurality of linear serpentine electrode sections forming a first arrangement on a first one of the substrates, and an opposed electrode on a second one of the substrates. The first arrangement comprises contact points for each serpentine electrode section each operable to receive a driving signal for imparting an electric field profile to form a portion of a linear Fresnel lenslet within the liquid crystal. An improved gradient index Fresnel lens is provided.

Simple and cost-effective measurement of polarization components or the complete PSoL (the so-called Stokes parameters) is achieved without any mechanical movements or deformation by using liquid crystal elements. A transmission of a first polarization of light is greater than a transmission of a second orthogonal polarization of light and transmission of the second polarization is greater than 5%. In another of the different states, the device has different levels of transmission of the first and second polarizations of light. At least two orthogonal polarization component values characterizing the light can be resolved by comparing an intensity of light captured in a plurality of the different states.

Liquid crystal cell assembly and method for detection enhancement

A variable angle beam control device is capable of maintaining the same color temperature of the light source regardless of the changes in the angle of the beam. The controllable light beam device has a light source with primary optics producing a low divergence light beam having an inverted angular distribution of the correlated color temperature (CCT), and a liquid crystal device with an electrically variable refractive index distribution arranged to receive said light beam and to provide a variable angle beam.
