A multiaxis closure hinge for pivotally mounting a closure panel adjacent to an opening in a body to rotate about a point remote from the hinge between a closed position over the opening and an open position disposed apart from the opening is disclosed. The hinge comprises a body pintle and a panel pintle, each, having an inner and an outer end, each inner end having an inner axis, each outer end having an outer axis a body bearing mount at the outer end of the body pintle for pivotally mounting the body pintle to the body for rotation about a first axis; a bearing mount at the outer end of the panel pintle for pivotally mounting the panel pintle to the panel for rotation about a second axis; and a coupling block for rotatably coupling the inner ends of the body pintle and panel pintle together in fixed angled relation to one another to rotate, one in relation to the other, about a third axis disposed substantially coincident to the inner axis of a respective one of the pintles, and, with respect to the first axis and second axis, in non-congruent angled relation; wherein the first, second and third axes intersect at the point during rotation between the open and closed positions.

Closure hinge

Tailgate hinge mechanism mounting the tailgate for swingable movement between closed, open and removal positions is designed to allow incorporation of a torque rod which cooperates with the hinge mechanism to assist in opening or closing the tailgate and yet is not a required portion of the hinge mechanism, but if desired may be quickly and easily installed as a unitary mechanism.

Tailgate hinge mechanism

Two laterally spaced hinges (18, 20) each comprising a pair of pivotally connected brackets (22, 24) (74, 74') one bracket being connected to the hood (10) (10') or deck lid and the other to the edge of the vehicle opening. A pair of links (42, 44) (82, 84) pivotally connected together at one end extend between the brackets of each hinge. Each pair of links is pivotally connected at opposite ends to the associated brackets and in a first embodiment arranged such that the links of one pair (42) fold and unfold in opposite directions from the links of the other pair (44) when the hinges are swung during opening or closing of the hood or deck lid. In a second embodiment, the two pairs of links (82, 84) fold in the same direction. A torsion rod (36) (104) extends between the hinges and is connected at opposite ends to the links of each pair, such that upon closing the deck lid or hood, the links twist the torsion rod at its ends in opposite directions to tension it.

Torsion rod assisted hinges

The present invention comprises a hinge strap assembly including a torque rod spring assembly having a torque rod. The torque rod has a pair of end portions connected by a convoluted portion. The convoluted portion has a plurality of legs connected by at least one U-shaped bight portion. A slider block and/or pivot block may be clampingly mounted on the convoluted portion to vary the stiffness of the torque rod spring assembly. The hinge strap assembly may include a hinge box, a hinge strap and a single convoluted torque rod which connects therebetween. Alternatively, the hinge strap may be boxless having a hinge strap and a torque rod upon which the hinge strap is pivotally mounted. An end of the torque rod may be directly affixed to the rear shelf thereby eliminating the conventional hinge box. An insert may be used to pivotally mount the torque rod within the hinge strap.
