The present invention relates to a matte surface film comprising: a base layer comprising a polyolefin; and a matte surface layer comprising a blend of high molecular weight high density polyethylene (HMWHD PE) with at least one incompatible polyolefin. The incompatible polyolefin may be ethylene propylene (EP) copolymers, ethylene butylene propylene (EBP) terpolymers or polypropylene (PP) homopolymers, such as metallocene catalyzed isotactic polypropylene (m-iPP) or metallocene catalyzed syndiotatic polypropylene (m-sPP). The matte surface layer may additionally contain a low molecular weight high density polyethylene or a medium molecular weight high density polyethylene. The film possesses an improved matte appearance and may be used for packaging and label applications.

A multi layer film having enhanced barrier properties with respect to oxygen and water vapor transmission as well as an excellent surface for film laminating, printing and coating processes is provided. The multi layer film includes a polyolefin core layer having a wax therein, a first surface layer including a polyolefin copolymer or terpolymer layer, and a second surface layer including a polar layer having ester functionality. Multi layer films according to the present invention are particularly useful as packaging films for food products, and are particularly well suited for subsequent laminating, printing or coating operations.

High barrier multi-layer film

A uniaxially heat-shrinkable, biaxially oriented, multilayer film having a polypropylene-containing core layer containing at least 70 wt. % of the multilayer film and at least one polyolefin-containing skin layer adjacent the core layer is prepared by biaxially orienting a coextrudate and thereafter orienting the coextrudate by stretching 10 to 40% in the machine direction. The core layer contains isotactic polypropylene, a modifier which reduces the crystallinity of the polypropylene-containing core layer and a nucleating agent. Such modifiers include atactic polypropylene, syndiotactic polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymer, propylene-butene-1 copolymer, ethylene-propylene-butene-1 terpolymer, and linear low density polyethylene. The nucleating agent improves long term dimensional stability. The skin layer can be high density polyethylene on both sides or high density polyethylene on one side and isotactic polypropylene on the other side.

Uniaxially shrinkable biaxially oriented polypropylene film

The present invention relates to multilayer film which is heat sealable over a broad temperature range. It is desirable to have a broad sealing temperature range to increase the production of packaging machines. The present invention also relates to multilayer film which provides easy opening and hermetic seals to packages. The film is made up of a core layer comprising linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and at least one skin layer having a melting point of at least 10&deg; C. below the core layer melting point.

Easy opening hermetically sealed film

Methods of preparing biaxially oriented polyethylene films with improved optics and sealability properties are provided. The methods include stretching in the machine direction a multi-layer base sheet having a core layer with a first and a second side, at least one skin layer and outer surfaces; then coating at least one of the outer surfaces with a resin selected from the group consisting of low density polyethylene, very low density polyethylene, linear low density polyethylene and blends thereof, and finally, stretching the base sheet in a direction transverse to the machine direction.

Biaxially oriented polyethylene film with improved optics and sealability properties

The present invention is a multi-layer film which has an improved composite structure for providing hermetic seals to packages manufactured in high speed packaging apparatus. The structure of the multi-layer film of the present invention includes a main substrate and a sealant layer. The sealant layer, in turn, includes two components, an intermediate layer which has the primary function of compliance during sealing, and a sealing layer which has the primary function of providing adhesivity to the completed seal. As a result of this invention, high strength hermetic seals can be provided to multi-layer films effectively and efficiently, and hermetic seals are provided with the ability to be peeled open without destruction of several layers of the film.

Multi-layer hermetically sealable film and method of making same

A multilaminar high density polyethylene (HDPE) film is provided having high biaxial orientation. The film includes a HDPE substrate, at least one outer layer of a propylene copolymer, and at least one layer of an adhesion promoter material positioned between the outer layer and the HDPE substrate, to efficiently mediate adhesion therebetween. The adhesion promoter is preferably a polyethylene material having a density lower than that of the HDPE base material. Preferred adhesion promoter materials include very low density polyethylene (VLDPE), high pressure low density polyethylene (HP-LDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), and medium density polyethylene (MDPE). The film is high biaxially oriented, being, stretched in the machine direction to a degree of from about 5:1 to about 8:1, preferably from about 6:1 to about 7:1, and stretched in the transverse direction to a degree of from about 6:1 to about 15:1, preferably from about 9:1 to about 13:1.

According to the present invention, the copolymers of ethylene vinyl alcohol are extruded using extrusion equipment coated with a fluoropolymer. This method improves the processability, alleviates/slows down die buildup, improves the extrudate quality by reducing die lines on surfaces of the extruded product.

Waste from stretch wrap films is recycled into non-blocking films useful as bags and liners as well as in food applications, by incorporating a polymer which contains cross-linked rubber particles, such as high impact polystyrene or an EPDM elastomer. The recycled films may include up to about 50 percent recycled stretch wrap with LLDPE and up to about 10 percent of the third polymer. The films may be single layer extrusions or multi-layer (A/B, A/B/A) coextrusions.

In accordance with the invention a linear low density polyethylene is coextruded with a composition containing a LDPE and/or HDPE. The product film exhibits substantially no melt fracture and no surface defects.

Recycling polyolefin material, e.g. biaxially oriented polypropylene film, coated with a chlorine-containing polymer, such as polyvinylidene chloride homopolymer and/or copolymer, and having a primer therebetween. First, a caustic solution is formulated containing from about 0.1 wt. % to about 50 wt. % caustic, and from about 0.05 wt. % to about 1.0 wt. % of a wetting agent. The formulated caustic solution is heated to a temperature from about 25.degree. C. to about 140.degree. C. The polyolefin material is soaked in the heated caustic solution until the material is separable from the chlorine-containing polymer. After separating the polyolefin material from the chlorine-containing polymer, the material is reprocessed into desired product by extrusion, molding or other product forming process.

Recycling polyolefins coated with chlorine-containing polymer

A method for extruding polypropylene containing vinylidene chloride polymers (PVdC). According to the present invention, the polymers are extruded using extrusion equipment coated with a fluoropolymer. This method improves the processability, alleviates thermal degradation of the PvdC, improves the extrudate quality by reducing discoloration and voids in surfaces of the extruded product and protects the equipment by reducing the corrosive wear.

There are disclosed opaque, biaxially oriented polymeric film structures each comprising a thermoplastic polymer matrix material, e.g., polypropylene, within which is located a stratum of voids, and positioned within each of at least a substantial number of the voids is at least one spherical void-initiating solid particle (i.e., a cavitating agent) of cross-linked polystyrene (CLPS) which is phase-distinct and incompatable with the matrix material, the volume of the particle being substantially less than the volume of the void, with one generally cross-sectional dimension of the particle at least approximating a corresponding cross-sectional dimension of the void. Also disclosed is a method of preparing the foregoing film structure by extruding into a film a combination of the matrix material and CLPS particles dispersed therein, and biaxially orienting the film either simultaneously or sequentially.

Opaque film and method for its preparation

Head pressure and extruder torque in the extrustion of linear ethylene polymers such as linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) are reduced by adding a small amount (less than 5 weight percent) of a thermoplastic polyurethane. Films extruded from the blend exhibit better surface appearance by reduction of melt fracture.
