According to embodiments of the present invention, there is provided an apparatus for controlling melt flow through a portion of the melt distribution network. A flow control device is provided. The flow control device comprises a body defining: a mixer configured to be positioned in a conduit for providing a path of flow for melt such that the mixer traverses substantially the whole cross-section of the path of flow; a temperature control portion associated with the mixer for actively controlling temperature of the mixer.

An injection molding machine includes various devices for reducing injection cycle time. A molded article detection apparatus and method are disclosed. The detection system and method determines if an article, or a portion thereof, remains on a machine core pin after the article ejection cycle has occurred, and, if so, communicates this condition to both the machine controller and the take-out controller. This prevents the machine from starting a new cycle and damaging the injection mold. Also, by communicating the extraction status to both the take-out controller and machine controller, if no articles or portions remain, injection cycle time is reduced. Additionally, a variable vacuum pressure apparatus and method are described. The apparatus and method allows early removal of molded articles from the molds into a take-out plate while the parts are still warm.

The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method of cooling molded preforms. The apparatus and method make advantageous use of air amplifiers to create a flow of cooling air over the molded preforms. In a first embodiment of the present invention, the air amplifiers are mounted to a part removal and cooling robot. In a second embodiment of the present invention, a plurality of air amplifier stations are positioned about an index block to cool the molded preforms. In a third embodiment of the present invention, a vacuuming system is provided to improve the adherence of the air flow created by the air amplifiers to the exterior surfaces of the molded preforms. In a fourth embodiment of the present invention, the air amplifiers are mounted to a movable plate and each amplifier has an internal bore sized to receive a molded preform to be cooled.

The technical field of the invention broadly relates to injection molding systems and more particularly to cooling of a core used in a mold of an injection molding machine. Cooling a core involves supplying coolant through a lengthwise supply tube that extends within a hollow bore formed in the core. The coolant flows through the supply tube, exiting as a stream of fluid at an open end of the supply tube where the stream contacts a substantially perpendicular inner surface of the core. The stream of fluid is initially deflected by this inner surface on an axis perpendicular to an axis of the original flow producing a stagnation zone in the stream having zero or relatively low velocity. The stagnation zone is adjacent to a high heat gate area and results in poor cooling of the core tip. The invention solves the problem of stagnation by application of a fluid velocity inducer. The fluid velocity inducer is located in the entry stream path of the fluid inducing a velocity thus reducing or eliminating the stagnation zone and improving the cooling of the core.
