The invention relates to sulfur silane coupling agents containing multiple blocked mercapto groups which are in a state of reduced activity until activated. The coupling agents are advantageously used in rubber formulations, for example, for fabricating tires with low rolling resistance.

An aqueous process is described in which thiocarboxylate silane is produced from haloalkyl silane by reaction of the haloalkyl silane with an aqueous solution of thiocarboxylate salt. Also described is a process for the preparation of aqueous thiocarboxylate salt from a sulfide and/or hydrosulfide and an acid chloride and/or acid anhydride.

Dissolved silanes, silicones and silicates from solvents used in the slurry phase Direct Synthesis of alkoxysilanes are removed by adding a compatabilizing agent and water to generate filterable precipitates and reusable solvent. The solvents are thereby remediated and made suitable for reuse in Direct Synthesis processes. Foaming is reduced with the remediated solvent and silicon conversion rates are higher. The precipitates are easily filtered and retain negligible quantities of solvent.
