A bat includes a handle having a proximate end and a distal end, a barrel having a hollow portion that accommodates the distal end, and a first damping section at least partially sandwiched between the handle and the barrel in the interior of the hollow portion. The first damping section includes a first portion in contact with each of the handle and the barrel in the interior of the hollow portion, and a second portion disposed closer to the proximate end than the first portion, the second portion being in contact with an inner peripheral surface of the barrel and not being in contact with an outer peripheral surface of the handle. In a cross section along a center axis of the barrel, the barrel has a depression depressed relative to the inner peripheral surface in the cross section, the second portion has a protrusion fitted in the depression.

A baseball or softball bat includes a barrel extending from a handle. A chamber is formed in the bat, such as in the knob attached to the handle, or an end cap attached to the barrel. A liquid or gel at least partially fills the chamber and dissipates vibrations created when the bat strikes an object.

A bat, which has a hollow barrel and an internal assembly configured to resist deformation of the hollow barrel, is disclosed. The internal assembly includes multiple rods disposed longitudinally within the hollow barrel. A vibration sleeve may be disposed between the outer surface of the barrel and an inner surface of the first portion of the outer locking sleeve.

A barrel of a baseball or softball bat is coupled to an end of a handle of the bat by means of a vibration absorber affixed to the end of the handle. Projections of a first locking section of the vibration absorber engage with depressions formed on an inner surface of the barrel. Adhesive disposed within gaps and channels of the vibration absorber adhere the vibration absorber to the barrel. A second locking section of the vibration absorber is attachable to a sleeve disposed over the handle. The sleeve may be of a material having shock absorbing or dissipating characteristics.

A multi-section ball bat includes a barrel, a handle and an end cap. The handle has a first end defining a grip portion and a generally opposite second end attached to the barrel. The end cap has a first end attached to an opposite end of the barrel. At least a portion of the handle may have a multi-wall configuration defined by a gap. Similarly, at least a portion of the end cap may have a multi-wall configuration defined by a gap. The gap in a wall of the handle or the end cap may be formed between layers of a multi-layer composite material forming the handle or end cap. The presence of the gap in the handle or end cap extends the sweet spot of the bat from the barrel into the handle and/or the end cap.

Assembling a multi-component baseball bat includes disposing a rigid sleeve coaxially over a portion of an elongate composite handle. The rigid sleeve encircles a second end of the handle and extends toward a first end of the handle. A ring is positioned near a second end of a bat barrel. A first end of the bat barrel is inserted into the second end of the handle; the first end of the bat barrel being secured within the second end of the handle. An illustrative bat includes an elongate composite handle and an elongate barrel, each having opposite first and second ends. The first end of the barrel is disposed within the second end of handle. A mechanism secures the first end of the barrel within the second end of the handle. A rigid sleeve encircles the second end of the handle, extending towards the first end thereof.

Multi-component bat and assembly process

A process for assembling a multi-component baseball bat includes providing a bat barrel having an end with a plurality of slots and selecting a bat handle. A section of the handle is enveloped by the end of the barrel. The barrel and handle are interconnected in coaxial engagement to define an intermediate tapered section which returns energy and power to the barrel that emanates from the barrel due to an impact of a ball on the barrel. An example of a multi-component baseball bat formed by the process includes a bat barrel having a plurality of slots; a bat handle; and a connector attached to an end of the handle. The connector engages the slots of the barrel and is coaxially disposed between the barrel and the handle for interconnecting the barrel and handle in an aligned relation, to return energy and power to the barrel.

A process for assembling a multi-component baseball bat includes providing a bat barrel having a threaded section and selecting a bat handle having a threaded section. The barrel and handle are interconnected in a threaded engagement, defining an intermediate tapered section providing impact absorption and reducing stress on the barrel and handle resulting from repeated impacts of a ball on the bat. An example of a multi-component baseball bat formed by the process includes a bat barrel having a first threaded section; a bat handle having a second threaded section; and a mechanism for coaxially interconnecting the first and second threaded sections in an aligned relation in order to provide impact absorption and reduce stress on an interface of the barrel and handle resulting from repeated ball impacts on the bat. The interconnecting mechanism defines, at least in part, an intermediate tapered section between the barrel and handle.

A baseball bat has a composite bat body including a grip, a handle and a barrel extending from the handle. The baseball bat also includes a generally tubular, resilient sleeve having greater impact absorption and resistance characteristics than the composite bat body. The sleeve is disposed adjacent to an exterior of the barrel of the bat body. The baseball bat further includes a mechanism for interconnecting the bat body and sleeve in a coaxial relation such that a portion of the bat body overlaps the sleeve.

A process for manufacturing a hollow metal ball bat includes forming a shell into a tubular shape using a pilger mill. The wall thickness of the tube shell is reduced by drawing the tube shell with the draw bench. A handle section and a taper section are created using the pilger mill. The handle is drawn through a draw bench, and the handle and taper sections are swaged.

Method and apparatus for making metal ball bats

A vibration damping baseball bat includes a barrel portion and a handle portion. The barrel portion and the handle portion are interconnected in an aligned and spaced-apart relation. The mechanism by which the barrel and handle portions are interconnected dampens vibrations created when a ball contacts the bat and provides limited pivotal movement of the barrel portion relative to the handle portion.

A reinforced-layer metal composite bat includes a metal outer shell forming a handle, a barrel, and an intermediate tapered section interconnecting the barrel and handle. A composite fiber shell is fixed to an outer surface of a metal inner shell. First and second opposing open ends of the composite fiber and inner shells are covered with elastomeric caps. The composite fiber and metal inner shell are positioned within the barrel of the outer shell to form an enlarged effective hitting area in the barrel that produces a desired audible sound upon impact.
