An improved intravascular blood pump. Intravascular blood pumps using the present technology may be powered by an onboard motor unit configured to be located inside the patient's body, but which is separated from the pump unit by a flexible intermediate section housing a flexible drive shaft.

Intravascular blood pump

An integrated sheath assembly for inserting a medical device such as a percutaneous pump into a vessel can include a first sheath having a first lumen defining a first opening between proximal and distal ends of the first sheath for passage of a portion of the pump and a second sheath having a second lumen defining a second opening between proximal and distal ends of the second sheath. The second lumen is expandable to allow passage of the first sheath containing the portion of the pump. The first sheath fills a space between the second sheath and the portion of the percutaneous pump when the first sheath containing the percutaneous pump is inserted into the second lumen. The first sheath has a first hub, and the second sheath has a second hub. In some embodiments, a single sheath and a movable connector can be integrated on the medical device.

Integrated expandable access for medical device introducer

A sheath for producing a fully sealed access to the interior of a vessel of an animal or human body comprises a base sheath having a tubular body defining a pass-through channel. The base sheath is adapted to be inserted into the vessel through a vessel aperture. A wall of the tubular body of the base sheath has a through channel. This channel extends in the wall from the distal end towards the proximal end. The channel can be present separately from the pass-through channel of the base sheath or can form a sideways extension of the pass-through channel, at least at the distal end. Such through channel is adapted to conduct blood from the vessel to the proximal end of the sheath when the sheath has been inserted into a vessel.

Sheath for sealed access to a vessel

The invention relates to a rotor for a compressible fluid pump, in particular a blood pump that can be introduced through a blood vessel into a patient's body, wherein said rotor comprises one or more conveying elements (), is compressible and expandable between a first compressed state and a second radially expanded state, is made at least partially from a plastic reinforced with reinforcing elements, in particular fibers () and is provided for rotation about an axis of rotation (). According to the invention, the rotor is tensioned in the first, compressed state and free from external stresses in the second, expanded state. A third state exists, which the rotor () occupies in the operating state under load. The reinforcing elements, in particular fibers, extend in the rotor in the third state at least in sections in a stretched manner.

Rotor for a medical device

An intravascular blood pump may have a catheter () and a pumping device () attached to the catheter (). The catheter () extends along a longitudinal axis and has a distal end () and a proximal end () opposite the distal end (). The catheter () may have a tubular stiffening structure () extending longitudinally between the proximal end () and the distal end () of the catheter (). The tubular stiffening structure () has a lumen () and a proximal end () and a closed distal end () opposite the proximal end (), wherein the lumen () of the stiffening structure () is configured to receive a pressurized fluid having an over-pressure of at least 5 bar.

Blood pump with reinforced catheter

The application relates to a pump, in particular blood pump. The pump comprises a drive shaft () which runs in an axial direction, a delivery element () which is connected to the drive shaft () in a distal region of this, and a housing () which surrounds the delivery element (). The delivery element () and the housing () are designed in a manner such that these automatically unfold after a forced compression. The housing () moreover comprises an inlet region () with at least one inlet opening (), a fluid-tight region () which surrounds a region of the delivery element (), and an outlet region () with at least one opening () for the exit of the pump medium. The delivery element () is arranged in a manner such that it projects into the outlet region ().

Pump, in particular a blood pump

An intravascular blood pump includes a pump housing having an input port and an output port. A relatively short intake cannula may draw blood in through an intake port and deliver the blood to the input port of the pump housing. The intake cannula is relatively short, to prevent excess hydraulic loss. An outflow hose is connected to the output port of the pump housing, so as to convey blood exiting the output port through the outflow hose in a downstream direction to a discharge port, e.g. into an aorta or other blood vessel. Despite the short intake cannula, the outflow hose longitudinally separates the intake port from the discharge port sufficiently so the intake port and the discharge port remain on opposite sides of a heart valve, despite inadvertent longitudinal shifts of the intravascular heart pump.

A control device () for controlling the rotational speed (n(t)) of a non-pulsatile ventricular assist device, VAD, () uses an event-based within-a-beat control strategy, wherein the control device is configured to alter the rotational speed of the VAD within the cardiac cycle of the assisted heart and to synchronize the alteration of the rotational speed with the heartbeat by at least one sequence of trigger signals (σ(t)) that is related to at least one predetermined characteristic event in the cardiac cycle. Further, a VAD () for assistance of a heart comprises the control device () for controlling the VAD, wherein the VAD is preferably a non-pulsatile rotational, for example catheter-based, blood pump.

Ventricular assist device

An intravascular blood pump () comprises a ring seal () that is configured to assume a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration and configured to contact and seal against an inner wall of the patient's blood vessel when inserted therein in the expanded configuration. A support member () is disposed inside the ring seal () in order to support the ring seal () from the inside, wherein the support member () is configured to collapse at least partially when a predetermined pressure difference between a proximal area and a distal area of the blood vessel acting on the ring seal () is exceeded.

A method and an apparatus for use in estimating blood flow in an intravascular blood pump comprise retrieving reference data from a set of reference data obtained in a test environment. The set of reference data comprises, for at least one motor speed at different pump loads, including a first pump load, both a reference motor current (I) of a motor driving the blood pump and an amount of fluid flow through the blood pump. After placement of the blood pump in the patient, a patient-specific motor current for said motor speed at said first pump load is measured, and a motor current deviation value (ΔI) is calculated from the reference motor current (I) at said first pump load and patient-specific motor current. Finally, the motor current deviation value ΔI is used for estimating a patient-specific blood flow amount through the blood pump.

Method and apparatus for calibration and use in estimating blood flow in an intravascular blood pump

An intravascular blood pump comprises a pumping device including an impeller and an electric motor for driving the impeller. A rotor of the electric motor is rotatable about an axis of rotation and coupled to the impeller so as to be able to cause rotation of the impeller. An outer sleeve forms a casing of the pumping device, wherein stator components are fixed inside the outer sleeve by means of a casting compound. In a method of manufacturing the blood pump the stator components are placed on a molding base, including the outer sleeve to thereby form an interspace between the molding base and the outer sleeve in which the stator components are disposed. The casting compound is then injected into the interspace via the molding base to fix the stator components inside the outer sleeve. The outer sleeve preferably comprises a magnetically conductive material to form a yoke of the electric motor.

Method of manufacturing a blood pump

A blood pump comprises a pump casing having a blood flow inlet and a blood flow outlet, and an impeller arranged in said pump casing so as to be rotatable about an axis of rotation. The impeller has blades sized and shaped for conveying blood from the blood flow inlet to the blood flow outlet. The blood pump also has an outflow cannula having an upstream end portion, a downstream end portion and an intermediate portion extending between the upstream end portion and the downstream end portion. The upstream end portion of the outflow cannula is connected to the pump casing such that blood is conveyed from the blood flow outlet of the pump casing into and through the intermediate portion of the outflow cannula towards the downstream end portion of the outflow cannula, wherein the downstream end portion has a blood flow outlet through which blood can exit the outflow cannula. At least a portion of the intermediate portion of the outflow cannula has an outer diameter that is larger than an outer diameter of the pump casing.

Blood pump

A blood pump for supporting a patient's heart includes a flow cannula having a distal portion including a distal end and a proximal portion including a proximal end opposite the distal end, the distal end of the flow cannula configured to be connected to the patient's heart or a blood vessel to establish fluid communication between the blood pump and the patient's heart and blood vessel, respectively. The flow cannula further includes an intermediate portion attached to the distal portion and the proximal portion, wherein the intermediate portion allows twisting thereof with a lower force than the distal portion and the proximal portion. The intermediate portion can be fully occluded by twisting it. At least a portion of the intermediate portion either alone or in combination with the distal portion is adapted to be permanently attached to the patient's heart or a blood vessel.

Aspects of the present technology relate to compressible and expandable pumps. In one aspect, a pump is provided including a pump housing that is expandable and compressible and a rotor that is expandable and compressible and disposed in the pump housing. The rotor includes at least one rotor blade, a hub, and an axis of rotation. At least a portion of the at least one rotor blade extends from the hub along a first axis that is offset a predetermined distance from a radial axis of the rotor that traverses the axis of rotation. The pump further includes a drive shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, wherein the hub of the rotor is mounted to the distal end of the drive shaft and the drive shaft is rotated to rotate the rotor.
