Method for heat treating a steel component () comprising the steps of: a) carbonitriding the steel component () at a temperature of 930-970&#xb0; C., b) cooling the steel component (), d) re-heating the steel component () to a temperature of 780-820&#xb0; C. and d) quenching the steel component (). The method comprises the step of either e) performing a bainite transformation at a temperature just above the martensite formation temperature, transforming 25-99% of the austenite into bainite at the temperature and then increasing the temperature to speed up the transformation of the remaining austenite into bainite, or f) holding the steel component () at an initial temperature (T) above the initial martensite formation temperature (Ms), and lowering the initial temperature (T) to a temperature (T) that is below the initial martensite formation temperature (Ms) but above the actual martensite formation temperature during the bainite transformation.

Method and steel component

Bearing component () comprising steel and at least one flash butt weld joint. The steel comprises, by weight, max 20 ppm S and max 15 ppm O and in that said steel includes sulphide inclusions and less than 5% of the sulphide inclusions contain encapsulated or embedded oxide inclusions.

The present invention related to a method, and an apparatus arrangement, for determining a fatigue limit for rolling contact initiated fatigue of a rolling bearing. The method comprises running a rolling bearing while being exerted to a load which generates sub-surface transformations in a rolling element contact zone of the outer or inner ring. Furthermore a set of sub-surface transformations in the contact zone along a raceway portion of the rolling bearing is identified and measured and used for generation of a parameter data set, wherein a fatigue parameter value representative of a predicted fatigue limit for the rolling bearing is determined based on the generated data set of sub-surface transformations.

A method of complete bainite hardening of steel for use in bearings and other load carrying components, wherein bainite transformation is performed at a temperature just above the martensite formation temperature, transforming 25%-99% of the austenite into bainite at said temperature, and then increasing the temperature to speed up the transformation of the remaining austenite into bainite.

Steel is described which is improved by dissolving components of the steel that oppose its workability into a ferrite phase of the steel, and by combining components of the steel that impart desirable properties to it with carbon to form carbides. The steel is useful for highly stressed structural members.

Steel elements designed to withstand high stress, such as roller bearing elements, are produced by using a steel which has substantially eutectoid composition, a such a steel billet being plasticly formed, without prior soft-annealing, at a temperature just above the A1 temperature of the steel, to a shape approaching the final shape of the element, the element thus shaped being thereafter hardened directly from the forming temperature and being subsequently subjected in conventional manner to final grinding and polishing if required.
