A method of determining a distance to an object is presented. A first photon and a second photon are simultaneously generated. The first photon is reflected off an object. The second photon is directed to an optical cavity. An arrival of the first photon is correlated with an arrival of the second photon, and the distance to the object is at least partially determined using the correlation.

Entangled-photon range finding system and method

Systems for and methods of detecting gravitational acceleration and gravity gradients are disclosed. The systems and methods include gravity gradiometers whose axes are substantially horizontal. In comparison with prior art systems, the systems presently disclosed provide one or both of more accurate measurements for the same amount of space, and smaller space requirements with the same or better accuracy.

A cross-ambiguity function generator ('CAF') uses properties of quantum mechanics for computation purposes. The CAF has advantages over standard analog or digital CAF function generators, such as improved bandwidth. The CAF may be used for traditional geolocation or RADAR applications.

Novel spectroscopy techniques using entangled photons are disclosed. In one technique, entangled photons are directed to a sample of interest, while the photons with which they are entangled are resolved according to frequency. The photons transmitted by or reflected from the sample and the frequency-resolved photons are detected. Such detection may be by way of an electronic coincidence counter or a biphoton sensitive material, which absorbs entangled photons while allowing other photon pairs to pass. Detection information is used to derive spectroscopic properties of the sample. In another technique, a Fourier transform spectroscopy technique using entangled photons is disclosed. Entangled photons are directed to a sample, while the photons with which they are entangled are directed to a Michelson interferometer. The photons transmitted by or reflected from the sample and the photons leaving the Michelson interferometer are detected. Such detection may be by way of an electronic coincidence counter or a biphoton sensitive material. Detection information is used to derive spectroscopic properties of the sample.

The invention according to a first aspect may include an optical system. The optical system may have an axial axis. This optical system may have a number of primary mirror segments. A number of reflectors may be arranged about the axial axis. The primary mirror segments may be configured to reflect a number of principal rays along a first set of chords to corresponding reflectors. These reflectors may be configured to reflect the corresponding principal rays along a second set of chords. Both the first set of chords and the second set of chords may have an angle in excess of 45 degrees with respect to the direction of the axial axis. The invention according to a first aspect may also include a second set of reflectors. The second set of reflectors may be configured to direct the light to an image plane. Other aspects of the invention may include a method of receiving light using an optical system configured to spiral light though the system and a method of making such a system.
