A method and apparatus for improving dispersal performance of instruction threads is described. In one embodiment, the dispersal logic determines whether the instructions supplied to it include any NOP instructions. When a NOP instruction is detected, the dispersal logic places the NOP into a no-op port for execution. All other instructions are distributed to the proper execution pipes in a normal manner. Because the NOP instructions do not use the execution resources of other instructions, all instruction threads can be executed in one cycle.

Method and apparatus for improving dispersal performance in a processor through the use of no-op ports

A logic system for resolving port contentions associated with memory-access requests in data packet routing is provided. The logic system comprises a determination logic for assessing and reporting port status of busy or not busy, a command mechanism for issuing commands contingent on determination results and a staged buffer memory for holding pending requests waiting for permission to access the memory. A single request at the head of the buffer memory is considered for port access whereupon if a port is determined to be busy, the command logic issues appropriate commands to units responsible for downloading packets from the memory and for sending new memory-access requests.

Methods and apparatus for improving system performance using redundant arithmetic are disclosed. In one embodiment, one or more dependency chains are formed. A dependency chain may comprise of two or more instructions. A first instruction may generate a result in a redundant form. A second instruction may accept the result from the first instruction as a first input operand. The instructions in the dependency chain may execute separately from instructions not in the dependency chain.
