A system and method for autonomic problem determination. Events and problems associated with the events are received from a computing resource and are expressed as entries in an event-problem matrix. Expert knowledge is expressed as entries in one or more multi-level structure dictionaries. The system and method enables dynamic interaction between the events in the matrix and the current dictionaries with its entries being updated continuously to maximize correlation among the events and problems. The index of each term in the dictionary is used to calculate the weight of each event in the matrix wherein events having frequent association with a specific problem will be given a higher weight in the matrix. Using singular value decomposition (SVD), the weighted events enable an accelerated and accurate convergence to a set of specific associated problems. Feedback, responsive to the output of the problem determination, is provided to trigger the recalculation of the index of each associated term in the dictionaries, resulting in gradual evolution of the dictionaries to accumulate expert knowledge.

Adaptive multi-levels dictionaries and singular value decomposition techniques for autonomic problem determination

A statistical approach implementing Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to a policy-based management system for autonomic and on-demand computing applications. The statistical approach empowers a class of applications that require policies to handle ambiguous conditions and allow the system to 'evolve' in response to changing operation and environment conditions. In the system and method providing the statistical approach, observed event-policy associated data, which is represented by an event-policy matrix, is treated as a statistical problem with the assumption that there are some underlying or implicit higher order correlations among events and policies. The SVD approach enables such correlations to be modeled, extracted and modified. From these correlations, recommended policies can be selected or created without exact match of policy conditions. With a feedback mechanism, new knowledge can be acquired as new situations occur and the corresponding policies to manage them are recorded and used to generate new event and policy correlations. Consequently, based on these new correlations, new recommended policies can be derived.

Under the present invention, a customized contract is created based on the needs of the parties and is then stored within a secure computer infrastructure. Security within the computer infrastructure is typically provided through encryption such as 128 bit encryption. Moreover, all actions taken with respect to the contract (e.g., approval, execution, etc.) occur within the infrastructure and are recorded so that a record can be provided. Any party taking action will first be authenticated before access to the infrastructure is granted. In order for the contract to be electronically executed, both the originating contract partner and the receiving contract partner must first deliberately approve the contract. Once approval has been obtained, the contract can be electronically executed by both parties. After execution is complete, a final image of the contract is generated that includes the electronic signatures and the date of execution.

A method and system is disclosed for scheduling data download, such as web pages, databases or softwares, over a network such as the internet. The method includes the steps of (a) initiating the data download request and the user input interfaces; saving the requesting computer system's network address; (b) fetching and saving those web pages, databases or softwares' source entities and their corresponding network addresses for the upcoming data download; (c) fetching and saving from the user's input on the schedules, user ids and passwords, disk directories, limits on bandwidth, downloading time and allocated storage space for the data download; (d) setting the system timer at the wake-up time according to the data download schedules; (e) automatically turning on the requesting computer system according to the system timer and dialing up to connect to the network; (f) accessing the download data's network address and transmitting the data to the requesting computer system; (g) receiving and storing the requested web pages, databases or softwares in the requesting computer system; (h) interrupting a particular data downloading if the downloading time exceeding the user's earlier input downloading time limit or if the allocated download storage space reached the user specified limit; (i) automatically disconnecting from the network; (j) automatically rescheduling the data download in some other time if the previous data download is not successful or the network is too busy; (k) automatically turning off the requesting computer system. In this manner the requester doesn't need to keep the requesting computer system power on till the upcoming download actvities.

In a multiprocessor system, such as a graphics data processing system, a method is disclosed for processing input data in a data processor pipeline. The method includes steps of operating a main thread to store input data in an input buffer until the input buffer is full or the input data ends. If a child thread does not exist, the method creates a child thread and assigns the input buffer to the child thread for processing. If a child thread already exists, the method determines if the child thread can be assigned the input buffer and, if so, then assigns the input buffer to the child thread for processing. If the child thread cannot be assigned the input buffer for processing, the main thread assigns the input buffer to itself for processing in parallel with processing being performed by the child thread. The steps of assigning and determining employ local variables that are accessible to both the main thread and the child thread, and that do not require an operating system call to change and/or test. The method includes a further step of sending a processed data buffer to a subsequent processing stage of the pipeline, such as a rasterizer unit. In a preferred embodiment the step of sending is executed only by the child thread, whether the data buffer was processed by the child thread or by the main thread.

A method for providing vias, lines and other recesses in VLSI interconnection structures with copper alloys to create a thin layer of an oxide of an alloying element on the surface of the deposited alloy and on portions of the alloy which are in contact with an oxygen containing dielectric is disclosed. The present invention is also directed to VLSI interconnection structures which utilize this copper alloy and thin oxide layer in their vias, lines and other recesses. The oxide layer eliminates the need for diffusion barrier and/or adhesion layers and provides corrosion resistance for the deposited copper alloy. VLSI devices utilizing this copper alloy in the vias, lines and other recesses interconnecting semiconductor regions, devices and conductive layers on the VLSI device are significantly improved.
