A steering column for a motor vehicle comprises struts as a support of the steering column tube on vehicle parts. At least one of these struts extends in the transverse direction of the vehicle. On at least one transversely extending strut, at least one separating point is constructed by way of which, in the event of a crash load, the strut can be divided into mutually separated strut parts. During a crash, an unfavorable movement of the steering column tube is therefore prevented.

A forward structure of a motor vehicle has a cross member which connects the two A-columns with one another and which is used for fixing a steering column and a knee restraint. A strut is fixed on the forward structure and extends from the cross member to a transmission tunnel extending in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. At least two mutually overlapping strut sections of the strut have a connection area which, under a load during a crash and after overcoming a force threshold, can be elongated in a longitudinal direction while absorbing energy. A force limiting device is provided in the connection area of the strut sections in the force transmission path. Consequently, after the force threshold is exceeded, an energy reduction is achieved during a predetermined lengthening path of the connecting strut and at a constant force level so that a yielding of the impact-loaded knee restraint together with the cross member takes place with a force-limited resistance along a predetermined path distance.

A knee impact absorption assembly for passenger vehicles is disclosed. Two supporting parts are arranged such that they are spaced apart laterally from one another and are connected to a transverse carrier extending in the transverse direction of the vehicle and fixed to the vehicle. A high degree of energy absorption is achieved in the case of a slight displacement of knee impact parts of an instrument panel carrying part or dashboard by providing that the transverse carrier with the supporting parts extend above points in which the knee of the occupant makes impact and each supporting part has a hook-shaped configuration. The supporting parts include struts which are directed such that they are angled off laterally upwards from a web connecting to the instrument panel carrying part or dashboard. The struts are provided with an angle cross-section, project at a distance from one another and are fixed on the transverse carrier by means of their free ends. The struts are configured to absorb knee impact forces by deformably moving both in a vehicle longitudinal direction and in a transverse direction with respect to each other.

Securing arrangement for absorbing knee-impact forces

Impact protection devices, arranged in steering wheels or dashboards of motor vehicles, for vehicle occupants are provided with covers which open in the event of an accident in order to release an inflating air bag of the protection device. The cover, which consists of at least one cover flap, is injection molded onto a carrier part by a tough elastic plastic. The plastic surround has along an edge, intended as pivot axis, of the cover flap a cross-sectional tapering which serves as a hinge. At the other edges, the plastic surround is constructed towards the corresponding edges of the carrier part as a groove which, in the event of pressure on the cover flap in the opening direction, easily releases the carrier part edge.
