The invention relates to a modular pulse source consisting of a main module and at least one additional module which are connected in series to each other in the sense of two-terminal circuits. The modules each comprise an energy storage device. The energy storage device of the main module is initially charged by a charging circuit. The invention relates to a modular power converter which is configured from at least one main module to be actively supplied and an arbitrary number of N&#x2212;1 further modules. All modules are connected to one another in series (for example by modular terminals, where the term modular terminals shall also comprise any other kind of electrical connection, and in particular plug connections). Each module comprises switching devices and at least one energy storage device, as a result of which the individual module is capable of being charged with an adjustable voltage. The switching devices, which are preferably realized by transistors, allow the module to be connected according to an active operation in terms of the series connection or according to a bypass operation in which case the respective module is quasi bridged and therefore cannot contribute to the voltage path of the series connection. The output voltage of the power converter is tapped at the end points of the series connection.

Multi-level converter topology with the possibility of dynamically connecting individual modules in series and in parallel

The present invention relates to an electrical converter for power supply, which is constructed from individual modules. Each of the identical modules includes a module capacitor and can be switched by switching elements such that the module capacitors of the modules may be connected in series or in parallel, or a current flow takes place through the modules without charging or discharging the module capacitor. In this manner, the voltage can be connected across the terminals of the converter by a corresponding control of the switching elements in stages with low loss levels. According to the invention, the voltages of these capacitors are adjusted with respect to each other by load balancing prior to parallel connection of the capacitor modules so that the corresponding losses are minimized.
