A seal element () for providing a static or dynamic seal between two components () in a downhole tool includes a polymer host material () and a plurality of nanostructures () forming a nanocomposite material (). The polymer host material () has a plurality of regions of free volume () that receive the nanostructures (). The nanostructures () and the polymer host material () form interfacial interactions that improve the useful life of the seal element () by minimizing seal failures associated with explosive decompression, extrusion, spiral failure, abrasion, temperature degradation and the like.

Downhole seal element formed from a nanocomposite material

The present disclosure addressed apparatus and methods for forming an annular isolator in a borehole after installation of production tubing. Annular seal means are carried in or on production tubing as it is run into a borehole. In conjunction with expansion of the tubing, the seal is deployed to form an annular isolator. An inflatable element carried on the tubing may be inflated with a fluid carried in the tubing and forced into the inflatable element during expansion of the tubing. Reactive chemicals may be carried in the tubing and injected into the annulus to react with each other and ambient fluids to increase in volume and harden into an annular seal. An elastomeric sleeve, ring or band carried on the tubing may be expanded into contact with a borehole wall and may have its radial dimension increased in conjunction with tubing expansion to form an annular isolator.

Annular isolators for expandable tubulars in wellbores

A drill bit () for drilling a wellbore that traverses subterranean formations includes a drill bit body () having a plurality of journal pins (), each having a bearing surface (), and a rotary cutter () rotatably mounted on each journal pin (), each rotary cutter () including a bearing surface (). A pressure-compensated reservoir () is in fluid communication with the bearing surfaces () and has a lubricant therein. A seal element () is positioned between each journal pin () and rotary cutter () and retains the lubricant in the bearing surfaces (). The seal element () is formed from a nanocomposite material including a polymer host material and a plurality of nanostructures.

Drill bit having an improved seal and lubrication method using same

A seal and seal assembly for use with well tools, such particularly as well packers, for sealing the annulus between the well packer mandrel and the wall of a well tubing such as casing. The seal is fabricated of an elastomeric-like material comprising fluorocarbon resins, poly arylene ketone, and carbon fibers mounted between end retainer assemblies each comprising a mesh anti-extrusion ring, a tapered mesh backup ring, and a metal backup shoe. The seal has internal longitudinally spaced V-shaped recesses to cause the seal to buckle radially outwardly as it is compressed longitudinally to increase the stress along the middle portion of the seal where the seal meets the well casing inner wall. The seal is useful at high temperatures and pressures such as 550 degrees F. and greater than 15,000 psi.

Seal and seal assembly for well tools

A piston for use as a TFL locomotive or well swab having a seal unit forming a fluid seal between the piston and the inner wall of a flow conductor or tubing string. The seal unit comprising at least one annular fin or lip extending radially from the piston. The annular fin or lip having an exterior portion formed from elastomeric material which is deformable to seal with the flow conductor and an interior portion formed from elastomeric material molded on wire mesh. The interior portion providing increased wear resistance and strength for the annular lip. In one version, the piston carries several individual seal units each having an annular lip.
