In general, a mobile virtual private network (VPN) is described in which service provider networks cooperate to dynamically extend a virtual routing area of a home service provider network to the edge of a visited service provider network and thereby enable IP address continuity for a roaming wireless device. In one example, a home service provider network allocates an IP address to a wireless device and establishes a mobile VPN. The home service provider network dynamically provisions a visited service provider network with the mobile VPN, when the wireless device attaches to an access network served by the visited service provider network, to enable the wireless device to exchange network traffic with the visited service provider network using the IP address allocated by the home service provider network.

Virtual private networking with mobile communication continuity

Various methods are provided to address the need for improved load balancing. In a one method, a packet loss is determined () for traffic sent between a first network node and a second network node. The determined packet loss is then used to determine () whether to perform load balancing. In another method, a first network node receives a request from a neighboring network node for a current loading status of the first network node. The first network node sends to the neighboring network node an indication of a backhaul loading level of the first network node.

A method is provided in one example embodiment and includes detecting user plane congestion at an eNodeB in connection with subscribers of a first one of a plurality of public land management networks ('PLMNs') sharing a radio access network ('RAN'), identifying one or more of the PLMNs to be notified of the detected congestion in accordance with an agreement between the PLMNs, and reporting RAN congestion information (&#x201c;RCI&#x201d;) regarding the detected congestion to only the identified one or more of the PLMNs. The detecting may comprise determining whether detected user plane congestion exceeds a first congestion threshold indicated for the first one of the PLMNs. The method may further comprise terminating the RCI reporting when the detected congestion falls below a second congestion threshold specified for the first one of the PLMNs. The first and second thresholds may be indicated in a table associated with the eNodeB.

Reporting radio access network congestion information in a network sharing environment

The invention that addresses the problem of authentication of the transport packet stream (which constitutes a flow within a session), which has been admitted into a managed packet network. Authentication and the subsequent policing of the flows supporting an identified client's authorized service prevent a large class of denial of service attacks described below. Specifically, the invention addresses two different matters: 1) key distribution and management 2) various forms of using a shared key for the authentication of transport packets on the user-to-network-interface (UNI).

Method and apparatus for authentication of session packets for resource and admission control functions (RACF)

A method and apparatus for supporting end-to-end quality of service (QoS) reservations for an implicit reservations model are provided. The invention teaches how to implement implicit resource reservations using the open-standard Resource and Admission Control Function (RACF). A request for resources for a given reservation between an originating and a terminating point in a network is received. A central controller for that domain processes the request for a given domain to determine whether routes for said reservation are available and whether necessary bandwidth for said reservation is available. An implicit reservation and a release of the bandwidth are respectively accomplished with a specific number of messages. If the routes and bandwidth are available, the reservation for the given domain is confirmed and the reservation request is passed to another central controller for a next domain having resources required to satisfy the reservation request.

Method and apparatus for real-time application-driven resource management in next generation networks

A method of supporting access to a selected Internet Protocol (IP) multimedia application via an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is provided for a roaming mobile node (MN)&#x2014;i.e., user equipment (UE)served by a wireless telecommunications system. The method includes: includes establishing a first IP tunnel between the UE and a local access gateway of a visited network, the first tunnel being anchored at the local access gateway; establishing a second IP tunnel between the UE and a home gateway of a home network, the second tunnel being anchored at the home gateway; receiving data packets at the local access gateway for the UE; filtering the packets received at the local access gateway to suitably classify corresponding traffic into one of a plurality of data flows supported within the first tunnel at varying Quality of Service (QoS) levels; and filtering the received packets.

Packet filtering/classification and/or policy control support from both visited and home networks

Apparatus and method for controlling establishment of telecommunications call connections in a telecommunications network. The network comprises a plurality of switches each with its own switching processor means, and a plurality of switching processing platforms each comprising at least one call processor. The switches and switching processing platforms are interconnected by a data network. SS7 signaling messages are received in one of the platforms and a call is assigned to a call processor. The call processor communicates with one or more switching processor means for controlling establishment of the call. Call features are processed under the control of the call processor. Advantageously, any call processor can be used for serving any call in the network and can control all legs of a multi-leg connection. Advantageously, in a large network, the number of platforms may be significantly less than the number of switches which reduces the cost and complexity of administration of the network.

Control of telecommunications networks

Apparatus and a method for establishing voice band telecommunications connections using a cross connect/switching system (CCSS) for establishing all or part of the connection setments required for individual calls. The CCSS contains bundles of provisioned paths and also has facilities for establishing individual per call paths which do not use these bundles. When a call is received, the CCSS switches the call through a combination of provisioned and unprovisioned paths. In the preferred embodiment, the CCSS is an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switch enhanced with converters to communicate with pulse code modulation (PCM) facilities for communicating with other switches and with associated PCM switches. Terminal adapters are provided in either the CCSS or the associated switches or both for processing voice signals to perform functions such as echo cancellation or speech quality enhancement. Advantageously, such a switch can support a very large node that carries extensive wideband and broadband signal traffic as well as the voice band traffic.

Merging the functions of switching and cross connect in

A system and method to provide voice enhancement circuits on a voice path on an individual basis, without having in-line circuits inserted into the lines or trunks. The enhancement circuit is inserted within one or more of the switches. This system comprises a switching system having a switching fabric and a central control, wherein the switching fabric includes several extended time slot interchange (XTSI) units connected to a time multiplex switch. The extended time slot interchange unit has approximately twice the capacity of a standard time slot interchange unit. Such XTSI is connected to voice enhancing circuits, which the TSI may then switch enhancement circuits into a call path. A method of setting up a call according to this invention includes routing the call to a switch, routing the call in the switch into an XTSI, which routes a call through the enhancement circuit, and then back through the XTSI.

Method and apparatus for providing switch-based features

A conference bridge that receives speech data in the form of data packets, and transmits data in the same form, without transforming the data in the conference bridge. The conference bridge according to this invention includes a plurality of inputs that have speech detectors that detect the presence of speech data. The speech detectors report the presence of speech to a controller. The controller causes data packets from one of the inputs detecting speech to be replicated for all outputs. If there is speech at more than one input at a time, then a decision is made as to which input to replicate. Advantageously, the decision is based on who is the loudest speaker. Further, the data that is replicated is not sent to the output for the originator in order to prevent echo.

Conference bridge for packetized speech-signal networks

A network monitor and associated control system is provided to monitor a toll network for customer signaling. A multi-tone signal processor and associated control is provided such that when signaling is detected, such signaling is validated against a provisioned list. A valid signal is reported to a central control of the network switch, which takes action in response to the signal.

Method and apparatus for monitoring a network for customer signaling

Disclosed is a switching system for pooling a predetermined number of pairs of individual voice and individual data signal lines to serve on a demand basis a greater number of lines that simultaneously transfer voice and data signals. Each pair of lines includes a line for transferring a voice signal and another line for transferring a data signal. The switching system includes a plurality of interface units each coupled to a pair of lines for transferring a voice signal between the individual voice signal line in the coupled pair of lines and a simultaneous voice and data signals line interconnected with the interface unit. Each unit also transfers a data signal between the individual data signal line in the coupled pair and the interconnected simultaneous voice and data signals line. The switching system also includes a switching network for interconnecting an interface unit and a simultaneous voice and data signals line requesting service.

Disclosed is a line interface circuit (103) having a negative feedback circuit (205) for maintaining the DC voltage on an electrically isolated communications line at a reference level such as ground for private branch exchanges using ground start supervisory signaling. The feedback circuit comprises a low-pass filter (301), a difference amplifier (302), and two voltage-to-current sources (303,304) each having a high output impedance. The low-pass filter passes only the voltage on the line below a predetermined frequency. The difference amplifier subtracts the passed voltage from a ground reference level to form a difference voltage. Depending on the polarity of the difference voltage, the two voltage-to-current sources source and sink current to and from the line to maintain the DC voltage on the line at the reference level. A load resistor (305) also included in the feedback circuit keeps the circuit from oscillating where the phase shift of any signal through the circuit is an integer multiple of 360 degrees. The high output impedance of the two voltage-to-current sources does not effect the impedance balance on the line.

Circuit for maintaining the DC voltage on an electrically isolated

A telephone switching network is disclosed having an announcement system coupled to a toll switching center. A plurality of short phrases are recorded in corresponding sectors of a disc store and announcements are assembled in real time by concatenating the appropriate phrases. Initial requests for announcements are sorted so that the reading heads seek across the disc in a straight line in a first direction to play back the recorded phrases. Any additional requests for playback received while the initial requests are being played back, are sorted in the opposite order for playback while the heads are driven in a second direction to their original position. All further requests are combined with any unfinished work for playback as the heads once again move in the first direction. The method of playing back while traversing the disc in both directions shortens the waiting interval for the listeners.

Announcement system message playback arrangement

A telephone network having a public announcement system is disclosed. Announcements are divided into message segments each of which is stored in a sector of a disc memory. When an announcement is activated, the message segments are loaded into a corresponding number of buffers for transmittal to calling customers. Each buffer will transmit the entire message, but in real time the buffers contain different message segments. Upon request for an announcement, the buffer containing the beginning message segment is selected to minimize holding time and customer waiting.
