A composite conductor assembly is configured as a core composed of polymeric elastomeric material and a conductive layer in intimate surrounding contact with the core. The polymeric material provides elasticity to the core to enable the core to elongate when subjected to strain forces within a tire. The conductive layer is fabricated from a low impedance material and may be configured as a composite wherein an inner base metal is selected as a strength member and an outer metallic layer is applied to the base for electrical performance enhancement.

A composite antenna and method for tire monitoring systems is configured as a core composed of polymeric material and a conductive metallic layer in intimate surrounding contact with the core. The polymeric material provides elasticity to the core to enable the core to elongate when subjected to stress forces within a tire. An antenna system and method for tire monitoring systems provides an elasticized substrate in combination with an antenna wire(s). The antenna cable can be wrapped around or otherwise applied to the elasticized substrate, preferably in a wave or sinusoidal configuration. When subjected to forces of external origin, the substrate can elongate while the antenna wire straightens. Upon release from the influence of such forces, residual spring forces within the elasticized substrate relax and return the substrate and the antenna cable carried thereby back to its original, optimal configuration. The pitch of the antenna material on the substrate may be customized to suit the needs of the particular tire and communication. The antenna may be sewn or woven into the elasticized fabric, helically wound around a core composed of such material, or attached in an alternative manner.

An antenna system and method for tire monitoring systems provides a flexible conductor having sufficient elongation characteristics as an antenna in a tire monitoring sensor system. A conductive strand is formed by wrapping a conductive tinsel ribbon around an extensible strength member. One or more conductive strands are combined to form an antenna cable that affixes to the inner liner of a tire. According to one aspect of the invention a conductive strand is formed by spiral wrapping at least one conductive tinsel ribbon around the strength member. According to another aspect of the invention, multiple tinsel ribbons may be wrapped around the strength member in braided fashion.

Flexible tinsel ribbon antenna and assembly method for a tire

An antenna system and method for tire monitoring systems provides a tubular antenna housing composed of suitably flexible material. An antenna is placed within the housing in either a straight configuration or a preferred alternative shape such as sinusoidal. The tubular housing may be straight walled or corrugated for additional flexibility. The electronics package may be provided with opposite ends dimensioned and configured for mating engagement with opposite ends of the antenna tube. Mating engagement between the electronics housing ends and the antenna tube ends secure the antenna tube to the electronics package. Subsequently, the antenna system may be secured by adhesive or other known techniques to the tire inner liner.

High strength, high carbon steel wire

A method of treating a metallic cord to improve its ability to adhere to rubber is disclosed. The method involves contacting the metallic cord with a naphthenic oil containing from 1 to 53 percent by weight of a soluble cobalt salt and thereby deposit from 0.002 to 0.7 grams of cobalt per kilogram of steel to the metallic cord.

Zinc-rich coated steel article

Steel cables are utilized for reinforcing a wide variety of rubber articles. For instance, pneumatic tires are normally reinforced with steel tire cords. It is important for such reinforcing cables to exhibit good fatigue and corrosion resistance. It has been unexpectedly found that the fatigue and corrosion resistance of such cables can be improved by incorporating syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene into the interstices between the steel filaments in such cables. This invention more specifically relates to a cable for reinforcing rubber articles having improved fatigue and corrosion resistance which is comprised of a plurality of steel filaments and syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene, wherein the syndiotactic-1,2-polybutadiene is dispersed within interstices between said steel filaments.

Process for manufacturing a cable for reinforcing rubber articles

The present invention relates to a brass-plated high carbon steel wire having applied thereto an aqueous zinc phosphate solution having a pH of from about 2 to about 3 and containing (1) a total of from about 28 to 32 grams per liter of phosphoric acid, (2) from about 8 to 11 grams per liter of free phosphoric acid, (3) from about 8 to 12 grams per liter of Zn.sup.+2 which may be derived from the group consisting of zinc oxide, zinc phosphate or mixtures thereof, and (4) wherein the mole ratio of total phosphoric acid to free phosphoric acid ranges from 2.5:1 to 04.0:1. In accordance with the present invention, the zinc phosphate coating on the brass-plated steel cord inhibits corrosion and adhesion of the wire to rubber after vulcanization is improved.

Cable for reinforcing rubber articles

The present invention relates to a process for treating a brass-plated steel wire comprising applying to the wire an aqueous zinc phosphate solution having a pH of from about 2 to about 3 and containing (1) a total of from about 28 to 32 grams per liter of phosphoric acid, (2) from about 8 to 11 grams per liter of free phosphoric acid, (3) from about 8 to 11 grams per liter of Zn.sup.+2 which may be derived from the group consisting of zinc oxide, zinc phosphate or mixtures thereof, and (4) wherein the mole ratio of total phosphoric acid to free phosphoric acid ranges from 2.5:1 to 4.0:1. In accordance with the present invention, the zinc phosphate coating on the brass-plated steel cord inhibits corrosion and adhesion of the wire to rubber after vulcanization is improved.
