A method for modifying the refractive index of an optical, hydrogel polymeric material. The method comprises irradiating predetermined regions of an optical, polymeric material with a laser to form refractive structures. To facilitate the formation of the refractive structures the optical, hydrogel polymeric material comprises a photosensitizer. The presence of the photosensitizer permits one to set a scan rate to a value that is at least fifty times greater than a scan rate without the photosensitizer in the material, yet provides similar refractive structures in terms of the observed change in refractive index. Alternatively, the photosensitizer in the polymeric material permits one to set an average laser power to a value that is at least two times less than an average laser power without the photosensitizer in the material, yet provide similar refractive structures.

Optical hydrogel material with photosensitizer and method for modifying the refractive index

A method for modifying the refractive index of an optical, hydrogel polymeric material. The method comprises irradiating predetermined regions of an optical, polymeric material with a laser to form refractive structures. To facilitate the formation of the refractive structures the optical, hydrogel polymeric material comprises a photosensitizer. The presence of the photosensitizer permits one to set a scan rate to a value that is at least fifty times greater than a scan rate without the photosensitizer in the material, yet provides similar refractive structures in terms of the observed change in refractive index. Alternatively, the photosensitizer in the polymeric material permits one to set an average laser power to a value that is at least two times less than an average laser power without the photosensitizer in the material, yet provide similar refractive structures. The method can be used to form refractive structures in corneal inlays and intraocular lenses following the insertion of such optical devices in an eye of a patient.

A toner composition includes a thermoset resin, cross-linking agent, and optionally additives such as colorants. The thermally cross-linkable toner composition may be fixed, using standard fusing systems, to yield images that withstand rigorous processing conditions, such as, for example, the high temperatures reached in flexible packaging processes.

Photoprotective and lightfastness-enhancing siloxanes

Disclosed is an aqueous ink composition comprising an aqueous liquid vehicle, a colorant, and an additive wherein, when the ink has been applied to a recording substrate in an image pattern and a substantial amount of the aqueous liquid vehicle has either evaporated from the ink image, hydrogen bonds of sufficient strength exist between the additive molecules so that the additive forms hydrogen-bonded oligomers or polymers.

Ink compositions containing quaternary-substituted lightfastness agents

Disclosed is a phase change ink composition comprising a colorant and an ink vehicle, the ink being a solid at temperatures less than about 50&#xb0; C. and exhibiting a viscosity of no more than about 20 centipoise at a jetting temperature of no more than about 160&#xb0; C., wherein at a first temperature hydrogen bonds of sufficient strength exist between the ink vehicle molecules so that the ink vehicle forms hydrogen-bonded dimers, oligomers, or polymers, and wherein at a second temperature which is higher than the first temperature the hydrogen bonds between the ink vehicle molecules are sufficiently broken that fewer hydrogen-bonded dimers, oligomers, or polymers are present in the ink at the second temperature than are present in the ink at the first temperature, so that the viscosity of the ink at the second temperature is lower than the viscosity of the ink at the first temperature.

Phase change ink compositions

A process comprising incorporating into an ink jet printing apparatus a developing composition; an oxidizing composition a coloring composition; and a fixing composition; ejecting droplets of the developing composition onto the substrate; ejecting droplets of the oxidizing composition onto the substrate; ejecting droplets of the coloring composition onto the substrate; and ejecting droplets of the fixing composition onto the substrate; wherein the process results in at least some portions of the substrate bearing images comprising all four compositions, the portions forming a printed image. Specific embodiments are directed to the realization of continuous tone and gray scale in image by control of the time at which color forming reactions are quenched by controlling the lime period between deposition of the color forming liquids and deposition of the fixing liquid; or control of the extent of color forming reactions by limitation of the quantity of one of the color forming liquids.

Liquid developers and processes thereof

Disclosed is an ink composition comprising water, a colorant, and sodium tetraphenylboride. Another embodiment of the present invention is directed to a set of inks for printing multicolor images in an ink jet printer, the ink set comprising (1) a first ink having a first color and comprising water, a first colorant, and at least one of (a) a cationic polymer, (b) a cationic surfactant, or (c) an inorganic salt the cation of which has a tetraphenylboride salt that is substantially insoluble in water, and (2) a second ink having a second color different from the first color and comprising water, a second colorant, and sodium tetraphenylboride, wherein intercolor bleed between the first ink and the second ink is reduced when the second ink is printed adjacent to, on top of, or underneath the first ink on a print substrate.

Disclosed is an ink composition comprising a liquid ink vehicle, a colorant, and a cyclic siloxane monomer composition capable of undergoing a ring-opening polymerization process upon contact with an anionic base. Another embodiment of the present invention is directed to a process which comprises (a) providing (1) a first ink comprising water and at least one cyclic siloxane monomer composition; and (2) a second ink comprising a liquid ink vehicle and an anionic base capable of causing the cyclic siloxane monomer to polymerize upon contact therewith, wherein at least one of the first ink and the second ink further comprises a colorant; (b) incorporating into an ink jet printing apparatus at least one of the first ink and the second ink; (c) applying the first ink onto a substrate; and (d) applying the second ink onto the substrate; wherein at least one of the first ink and the second ink is ejected from the ink jet printing apparatus in an imagewise pattern onto the substrate; and wherein the process results in at least some portions of the substrate bearing images formed from both the first ink and the second ink, said portions forming a printed image containing a polysiloxane and the colorant.

Ink jet printing with inks containing cyclic siloxanes

Disclosed is an ink composition comprising water, a colorant, and a borate ester, said ink containing water in an amount of at least about 5 percent by weight and containing water in an amount of no more than about 50 percent by weight, wherein either (a) the ink also contains an amine compound, or (b) the borate ester is hydrolytically stable.

Aqueous ink compositions containing borate esters

Disclosed is a process which comprises (a) incorporating into an ink jet printing apparatus (1) a first ink comprising water and at least one anionic monomer; and (2) a second ink comprising water and at least one cationic monomer, wherein the anionic monomer and the cationic monomer are selected so that upon contact of the anionic monomer with the cationic monomer, spontaneous polymerization or copolymerization of at least one of the anionic monomer or the cationic monomer occurs, and wherein at least one of the first ink and the second ink further comprises a colorant; (b) causing droplets of the first ink to be ejected in an imagewise pattern onto the substrate; and (c) causing droplets of the second ink to be ejected in an imagewise pattern onto the substrate; wherein the process results in at least some portions of the substrate bearing images formed from both the first ink and the second ink, said portions forming a printed image containing the colorant and a polymer formed from at least one of the anionic monomer or the cationic monomer. Similar processes are disclosed with N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and p-toluene sulfonic acid, with acrylamide and a multivalent metal nitrate salt, and with 5-vinyl tetrazole and an amine base.
