Compositions are generally provided that include an oxyfluoride compound. In one embodiment, the oxyfluoride compound has the formula: NaCaAGeOFNwhere A is Ba, Sr, or a mixture thereof; 0.01&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.1; 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.2; and 0&#x2266;z&#x2266;0.1. Methods of forming such compounds are also generally provided.

Stable phosphors for lighting applications

Direct synthesis methods are generally provided that include reacting Na(WO)&#xb7;2HO (and/or Na(GeO)&#xb7;2HO) with NaF in an inert atmosphere at a reaction tion temperature of about 950&#xb0; C. to about 1400&#xb0; C., along with the resulting structures and compositions.

Light emitting devices that include an energy source configured to generate light energy and an up-conversion phosphor configured to emit light having a wavelength shorter than that of the light energy generated from the energy source are provided. The up-conversion phosphor comprises an ordered oxyfluoride compound having a formula: ARMOFN. Methods are also generally disclosed for up-converting light energy.

Methods and systems of detecting analytes using a microcantilever system are generally described. The microcantilever system generally includes micro- or nano-sized elements that can be electrostatically driven to resonance. Utilizing the disclosed devices and methods, direct electronic detection of the resonant frequency, changes of the resonant frequency, and associated phase signal of a micro- or nano-sized element can be utilized to measure the presence of a targeted analyte. The detection system of the present invention utilizes a non-contact microcantilever device. That is, the surface of the microcantilever (e.g., the surface of the resonating beam) does not bond or otherwise attach to an analyte or other chemical. Thus, the microcantilever device, including the resonating beam, can be kept in pristine condition during and even after repeated use.

Method of sensing chemical and bio-molecular analytes and sensing system using a microcantilever

A light emitting device comprising a light producing element configured to generate ultraviolet light having a wavelength of from about 250 nm to about 400 nm and a self-activating phosphor comprising an ordered oxyfluoride compound is provided. The nitrogen-free or nitrogen-containing ordered oxyfluoride compound has a formula:ARMOF&#x2014;Nwhere A is Sr alone or Sr mixed with Ba and/or Ca such that A comprises at least about &#x2154; mole % of Sr and up to about &#x2153; mole percent of Ba and/or Ca; R is a rare earth element or a mixture of rare earth elements; M is Al, Ga, In, W, Mo, Bi, or mixtures thereof; 0&#x3c;a&#x2266;0.3; &#x3b4;1 and &#x3b4;2 are both from about 0.01 to about 0.1; and 0&#x2266;w&#x2266;0.05 such that 0&#x2266;w'&#x2266;0.1 and 0&#x2266;w&#x2033;&#x2266;0.15. The ultraviolet light excites the self-activating phosphor such that the self-activating phosphor emits visible light having a wavelength of from about 380 to about 750 nm.

Inorganic luminescent phosphor materials for lighting

Materials suitable for use in highly energy-efficient production of white light through photo-luminescence, such as in light emitting devices, are generally provided. A composition comprising a compound having the formula: SrAMOFwherein A is Ca, Ba, or a mixture thereof; M is Al, Ga, In, W, Mo, or a mixture thereof; 0&#x2266;v&#x2266;1; 0&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.4; and 0&#x3c;y&#x3c;0.2 is generally described. A composition comprising a compound having the formula: SrAInMOF, where A is Ca, Ba, or a mixture thereof; M is Al, Ga, W, Mo, or a mixture thereof; 0&#x2266;v&#x2266;1; 0&#x3c;m&#x3c;1; and 0&#x3c;x&#x3c;4 is also provided. Nitrogen can be substituted for a portion of the oxygen atoms in these structures. Methods introducing defects into a compound by removing a portion of oxygen and fluorine atoms from the compound are also provided.
