We provide a process for regenerating a used acidic ionic liquid catalyst which has been deactivated by conjunct polymers in a reactor, by removing at least 57 wt % of the conjunct polymers originally present in the used acidic ionic liquid catalyst in a separate regeneration reactor, so as to increase the activity of the catalyst. We also provide a regenerated used acidic ionic liquid catalyst having increased activity.

Regeneration of acidic ionic liquid catalysts

Processes for shutting down a regeneration reactor and for removing spent solid from the regeneration reactor may comprise shutting off a feed comprising an ionic liquid to the regeneration reactor, cooling the regeneration reactor, removing at least a portion of the ionic liquid from the regeneration reactor, purging the regeneration reactor with Ngas, introducing water into the regeneration reactor to form an acidic liquid in the regeneration reactor, and dumping the acidic liquid and the spent solid from the regeneration reactor. The acidic liquid may be neutralized with a basic liquid to provide a neutralized liquid. The spent solid may be separated from the neutralized liquid. In an embodiment, noble metal(s) may be recovered from the spent solid.

A process for regenerating a spent ionic liquid catalyst including (a) applying a voltage across one or more pairs of electrodes immersed in a spent ionic liquid catalyst comprising conjunct polymer-metal halide complexes to provide freed conjunct polymers and a regenerated ionic liquid catalyst; and (b) separating the freed conjunct polymers from the regenerated ionic liquid catalyst is described. An alkylation process incorporating the regeneration process is also described.

Electrochemical removal of conjunct polymers from chloroaluminate ionic liquids

A process for alkylating an aromatic compound comprising reacting at least one aromatic compound with a mixture of olefins selected from olefins having from about 8 to about 100 carbon atoms, in the presence of an acidic ionic liquid catalyst, wherein the resulting product comprises at least about 50 weight percent of a 1, 2, 4 tri-substituted aromatic compound or a 1, 2, 3 tri-substituted aromatic compound or mixtures thereof.

Method of making an alkylated aromatic using acidic ionic liquid catalyst

A process for regenerating a used acidic catalyst which has been deactivated by conjunct polymers by removing the conjunct polymers so as to increase the activity of the catalyst is disclosed. Methods for removing the conjunct polymers include addition of a basic reagent and alkylation. The methods are applicable to all acidic catalysts and are described with reference to certain ionic liquid catalysts.

Regeneration of acidic catalysts

The invention provides for a process for dewaxing a waxy hydrocarbon feedstock to form a lubricant oil. The invention is also directed to a catalyst system comprising a hydrotreating catalyst upstream of a dewaxing catalyst, used in the dewaxing of a waxy hydrocarbon feedstock to form a lubricant oil. In particular, the invention is directed to a process and catalyst system designed to maintain yield of lubricant oil product. Specifically, the yield of lubricant oil does not decrease more than 2%, at a target pour point, over a dewaxing temperature range. The hydrotreating catalyst helps prevent aging of the dewaxing catalyst and maintains lubricant oil product yield at a target pour point over a wide temperature range. The hydrotreating catalyst comprises platinum, palladium, or combinations thereof on a low acidity inorganic oxide support where acidity is measured by a decalin conversion of less than 10% at 700&#xb0; F.

Process and catalyst system for improving dewaxing catalyst stability and lubricant oil yield

Methods and compositions for stabilizing the activity of catalytic compositions during catalytic processes, such as alkylation. A catalytic composition comprising a partially deactivated ionic liquid catalyst may be regenerated by reaction with a metal to form reactivated catalyst and an inorganic catalyst precursor; and the catalytic composition may be amended in-process by addition of an organic catalyst precursor for reaction with the inorganic catalyst precursor to form fresh ionic liquid catalyst. The organic catalyst precursor may be protected from water, e.g., during handling, by hydrophobic material(s).

Methods and compositions for stabilizing catalytic processes

An ionic liquid catalyst, which has been regenerated by contacting a used ionic liquid catalyst with at least one regeneration metal in a regeneration zone in the presence of added hydrogen under regeneration conditions for a time sufficient to increase the activity of the ionic liquid catalyst. Also, an ionic liquid catalyst which has been regenerated by contacting a used ionic liquid catalyst with at least one regeneration metal in a regeneration zone in the presence of added hydrogen under regeneration conditions in the presence of an inert hydrocarbon in which conjunct polymers are soluble for a time sufficient to increase the activity of the ionic liquid catalyst.

Ionic liquid catalyst regenerated using a regeneration metal in the presence of added hydrogen

A method for reducing halide concentration in a hydrocarbon product made by a hydrocarbon conversion process using an ionic liquid catalyst comprising a halogen-containing an acidic ionic liquid comprising: (i) separating at least a portion of the hydrocarbon product from the ionic liquid catalyst used in the hydrocarbon conversion process from the hydrocarbon product; (ii) contacting at least a portion of the separated hydrocarbon product with an ionic liquid catalyst having the same formula as the ionic liquid catalyst used in the hydrocarbon conversion process; (iii) separating at least a portion of the hydrocarbon product from the ionic liquid catalyst of step (ii); and (iv) recovering at least a portion of the separated hydrocarbon product of step (iii) having a halide concentration less than the halide concentration of the hydrocarbon product of step (i) is disclosed.

Reduction of organic halide contamination in hydrocarbon products

A process for regenerating a used acidic ionic liquid catalyst, comprising: a. contacting the catalyst and hydrogen with a supported hydrogenation catalyst under hydrogenation conditions; and b. recovering a conjunct polymer that is a clear and colorless oil from the catalyst. A process for regenerating a used acidic ionic liquid catalyst which has been deactivated by conjunct polymers comprising the steps of contacting the used catalyst and hydrogen with a supported hydrogenation catalyst in a reaction zone under hydrogenation conditions in the presence of an inert hydrocarbon in which saturated conjunct polymers are soluble for a time sufficient to hydrogenate at least a portion of the conjunct polymers; and recovering the saturated conjunct polymers. Also, a process comprising: contacting the used acidic ionic liquid catalyst and hydrogen with a hydrogenation catalyst comprising a hydrogenation component under hydrogenation conditions; and recovering a conjunct polymer that is a clear and colorless oil.

Regeneration of ionic liquid catalyst and recovery of an oil

A process for regenerating a used acidic ionic liquid catalyst comprising contacting the used ionic liquid catalyst with at least one 'regeneration' metal in a regeneration zone in the presence of added hydrogen under regeneration conditions for a time sufficient to increase the activity of the ionic liquid catalyst is described. In one embodiment, regeneration is conducted in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent.
