A catheter for electrophysiology applications is disclosed herein that includes a tubular member and an end effector. The end effector is coupled to a distal portion of the tubular member. The end effector includes first, second, and third loop members configured so that the first loop member defines a first plane, the second loop member defines a second plane at an angle to the first plane, and the third loop member defines a third plane at an angle to the first plane and at an angle to the second plane. Each of the first, second, and third loop members are configured as a respective single axis magnetic coil, and the first, second, and third loop members are collectively configured to function as a three axis magnetic sensor.

A catheter with a variable circular loop is responsive to a contraction wire for increasing the coiling of the circular loop. The shape of the loop is supported by an elongated member, wherein a radially constrictive sleeve confines the contraction wire to extends immediately alongside the length of elongated member so as to improve uniformity and minimize misshaping of the loop during contraction.

A catheter has a distal assembly with at least one loop with ring electrodes. A single continuous puller wire for bidirectional deflection is pre-bent into two long portions and a U-shape bend therebetween. The U-shape bend is anchored at a distal end of a deflectable section which is reinforced by at least one washer having at least two holes, each hole axially aligned with a respective lumen in the deflectable section. Each hole is centered with a lumen so that each puller wire portion therethrough is straight and subjected to tensile force only. An apparatus includes a catheter assembly for use in a medical procedure to conduct electrophysiological mapping. The catheter assembly includes a catheter having an end effector with a tip member. One or more insert-molded microelectrodes are located in the tip member of the end effector for conducting electrophysiological mapping. The insert-molded microelectrodes include a microelectrode and a composite that isolates the microelectrode from contact with the tip member.

A catheter is described with an end effector having densely arrayed electrodes on three loops which are arrayed in various planar configurations when the end effector is unconstrained. The end effector has first, second and third loop members, each loop member includes two spines and a connector that connects the two spines to define a loop extending away from a tubular member of the catheter such that the first, second and third loop members are configured so that each connector of each of the first, second and third loop members is in contact with only one connector of the adjacent loop member.

A medical device control handle has a first actuation assembly and a second actuation assembly, wherein each assembly has a shaft that is axially aligned but not rotationally coupled with the other shaft. The first actuation assembly includes a first actuation member and a clutch mechanism having a friction disk for generating frictional torque in rendering the first actuation member self-holding. The first actuation member has a cam portion adapted to impart translational motion and rotational motion for disengaging the clutch mechanism upon pivotation of the first actuation member, thus allowing rotation of the first shaft to manipulate a feature of the medical device, for example, deflection. The second actuation assembly includes a second actuation member and a translating member that is responsive to rotation of the second shaft so as to manipulate another feature of the medical device. The second actuation member is also self holding.

A thermocouple assembly may feature a plurality of temperature sensors formed by thermocouple junctions. The sensors may be disposed within an inner diameter of the tubular element and sealed within the tubular element by thermally conductive material. An air gap may be defined by the thermally conductive material and the interior diameter of the tubular element between each pair of adjacent temperature sensors to improve thermal isolation.
