A flag demonstration apparatus which prevents flag furling is provided. The apparatus comprises a flagpole which further comprises a bottom portion and a top portion that removably fasten together and sandwich a lower swivel bracket. The apparatus also includes an upper bracket attached near the top of the top portion of the flagpole and is attached to at least one portion of a flag and the lower swivel bracket is attached to at least two portions of the flag. The lower swivel bracket allows the flag to rotate less than 360 degrees about the flagpole and also keeps at least a portion of the flag displayed, regardless of environmental conditions.

A system and method for achieving wireless local area network (WLAN) communications between an access point and a mobile device are disclosed. In at least some embodiments, the system involves an access point that includes a first transceiver capable of sending and receiving first wireless communication signals in accordance with a WLAN protocol, and a first transmitter capable of sending second wireless communication signals that are cellular/WAN communication signals on a first channel. The second wireless communication signals can be received by a mobile, dual-mode (or multi-mode) wireless communication device such as a cellular telephone and, upon such receipt, WLAN communications can be established and conducted between the access point (or another access point) and the mobile device.

Techniques are provided for allowing a node () in an ad hoc network to deterministically decide whether to relay broadcast information to another node in the ad hoc network. The node () receives broadcast information and measures received signal strength (RSS) of the broadcast information. The node () may determine if the measured RSS is below a low threshold, and if so, can relay the broadcast information to neighbor nodes. Otherwise, the node () can also determine if the measured RSS is above a high threshold, and if not, wait for a waiting period before relaying the broadcast information to the neighbor nodes. The node () may dynamically adjust the low threshold by decreasing the low threshold as the number of neighbor nodes increases and may dynamically adjust the high threshold by increasing the high threshold as the number of neighbor nodes decreases.

A method and apparatus for electing broadcast relay nodes (B, H, M) in an ad hoc network (). Each node (A-O) generates an attribute message including associated parameters. Each node (A-O) generates a weighted value (WV) based on the parameters. The WV can be included in the attribute message for that node, can provide a metric for ranking that node to be nominated to be a broadcast relay node, can alternatively provide a probability measure for that node to probabilistically elect itself as a broadcast relay node. The broadcast manager node (C) receives the attribute messages and elects at least one nominated node as a broadcast relay node (B, H, M) based on the attribute messages. Each node (A-O) can also initiate election of an intermediate broadcast relay node if that node fails to receive a test message within a predetermined time.

Nodes (---) in an ad hoc communication network are coordinated. The network includes the node () and one or more neighbor nodes (--). The node () can sleep in a low duty cycle. Further, the node () can awaken, responsive to a schedule; and register with a cluster head (); listen for one or more neighbors, wherein the at least one neighbor can be active (-) or idle (-); and/or listen for one or more requests from the cluster head () or active neighbor(s) (-). Responsive to the request(s), the idle node () can become active on a communication link.

During operation logic circuitry will determine if a de-sensing signal exists within any received signal and, if a de-sensing signal exists, then it will be assumed that a radar pattern exists where the de-sensing signal exists within the signal. Any received signal pattern is then correlated to known radar transmission pattern in order to determine whether or not a radar transmission pattern was received. If a known transmission pattern was received then logic circuitry will prevent further transmission.

The system design enables a plurality of pairs of users to communicate their channel utilization time periods by using the durations and start or stop times of certain transmissions to signal the start times and durations of later transmissions. Remote units within a first communication system () utilizes frequencies (channels) from a second communication system () when placing a call. When a first remote unit () wants to call a second remote unit () using the channels, the first remote unit sends a base station () a list of top N traffic channel blocks from the second communication system along with the identity of the second remote unit. The base station then pages the second remote unit using a signaling channel reserved by second system. The second remote unit responds to the page with its list of best traffic channel blocks/chunks. The base station then picks the best overlap of idle channels from the list received by the remote units, and sends the list to the remote units instructing them use those traffic channels. Once the remote units receive the available channels, they can begin their call.

A Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) receiver (), operating in conjunction with a transmitter () receives a sequence of voice packets representing a speech utterance transmitted over a VOIP wireless interface (). A receive packet buffer () buffers the received sequence of voice packets after receipt and before playback of reconstructed speech. A processor (), operating under program control, determines a transmission buffer () delay of a first packet in the sequence of packets representing the speech utterance. The control processor () further sets a prescribed amount of delay in the receive packet buffer () based upon the transmission buffer () delay so that the transmission buffer delay+receive buffer delay=a predetermined total delay. The status of the receiver buffer () is monitored and tracked by or fed back to the transmitter side to minimize receive buffer () under-runs by use of CDMA soft capacity (), link dependent prioritization (), real-time packet prioritization () and/or variation of vocoder () rates ().

VOIP transmitter and receiver devices and methods therefor

A wireless communication network ( ) employs a method and apparatus for reliably communicating information packets in the network. A first wireless device ( ) in the network transmits an information packet to a second wireless device (e.g., ) in the network over a first wireless communication channel ( ). The first device then determines whether the information packet was successfully received (e.g., received without errors) by the second device.
