A crowbar module includes first and second electrical terminals, a module housing, and first and second crowbar units. The first crowbar unit is disposed in the module housing and includes a first thyristor electrically connected between the first and second electrical terminals. The second crowbar unit is disposed in the module housing and includes a second thyristor electrically connected between the first and second electrical terminals in electrical parallel with the first crowbar unit.

Devices for overvoltage, overcurrent and arc flash protection

A surge protective device (SPD) includes a first electrical terminal, a second electrical terminal, and an overvoltage protection circuit connected between the first and second electrical terminals. The overvoltage protection circuit includes a gas discharge tube and a current management circuit connected in series to the gas discharge tube. The current management circuit includes a varistor and a resistor that are connected in parallel between a first node of the current management circuit and a second node of the current management circuit.

Surge protective devices, circuits, modules and systems including same

A surge protective device (SPD) module includes a module housing, first and second module electrical terminals mounted on the module housing, a gas discharge tube (GDT) mounted in the module housing, and a fail-safe mechanism mounted in the module housing. The GDT includes a first GDT terminal electrically connected to the first module electrical terminal and a second GDT terminal electrically connected to the second module electrical terminal. The fail-safe mechanism includes: an electrically conductive shorting bar positioned in a ready position and repositionable to a shorting position; a biasing member applying a biasing load to the shorting bar to direct the shorting bar from the ready position to the shorting position; and a meltable member. The meltable member maintains the shorting bar in the ready position and melts in response to a prescribed temperature to permit the shorting bar to transition from the ready position to the shorting position under the biasing load of the biasing member. In the shorting position, the shorting bar forms an electrical short circuit between the first and second GDT terminals to bypass the GDT.

A surge protective device (SPD) module includes a varistor and an electrical conductor. The varistor includes a hole defined therein and extending through the varistor. The electrical conductor extends through the hole in the varistor.

Surge protective device modules and systems including same

A surge protective device (SPD) module includes a module housing, first and second module electrical terminals mounted on the module housing, an overvoltage clamping element electrically connected between the first and second module electrical terminals, and a thermal disconnector mechanism. The thermal disconnector mechanism is positioned in a ready configuration, wherein the overvoltage clamping element is electrically connected with the second module electrical terminal. The thermal disconnector mechanism is repositionable to electrically disconnect the overvoltage clamping element from the second module electrical terminal. The thermal disconnector mechanism includes: an electrode electrically connected to the overvoltage clamping element; a disconnect spring elastically deflected and electrically connected to the electrode in the ready configuration; a solder securing the disconnect spring in electrical connection with the electrode in the ready configuration; and a heat sink member thermally interposed between the electrode and the solder, the heat sink member having a thermal capacity. The solder is meltable in response to overheating of the overvoltage clamping element. The disconnect spring is configured to electrically disconnect the overvoltage clamping element from the second module electrical terminal when the solder is melted. The thermal capacity of the heat sink member buffers and dissipates heat from the overvoltage clamping element to prevent the solder from melting in response to at least some surge currents through the SPD module.

Surge protective device modules including integral thermal disconnect mechanisms and methods including same

A modular overvoltage protection unit for electrically connecting a first power line and/or a second power line to a protected earth (PE) line in the case of an overvoltage event on the first or second power line includes a unit enclosure defining an enclosure cavity, and first and second surge protection devices (SPDs) each disposed in the enclosure cavity. Each of the first and second SPDs includes: a first electrode in the form of a metal housing defining a housing cavity; a second electrode disposed within the housing cavity; and a varistor member captured between and electrically connected with each of the first and second electrodes, wherein the varistor member is formed of a varistor material. The overvoltage protection unit further includes: a first line terminal to connect the first power line to the overvoltage protection unit, wherein the first line terminal is electrically connected to the second electrode of the first SPD; a second line terminal to connect the second power line to the overvoltage protection unit, wherein the second line terminal is electrically connected to the second electrode of the second SPD; and a PE terminal to connect the PE line to the overvoltage protection unit, wherein the PE terminal is electrically connected to the metal housing of the second SPD. The metal housing of the first SPD is electrically connected to the PE terminal through the metal housing of the second SPD.

Modular overvoltage protection units

A circuit protection device includes an overvoltage monitor circuit that is operable to monitor a power supply circuit to detect an overvoltage condition on the power supply circuit and to change a state of an overvoltage output responsive to the overvoltage condition on the power supply circuit. A bi-directional switch is operable to interrupt or limit current flow though the power supply circuit responsive to the change in the state of the overvoltage output. A bi-directional voltage limiter is connected across output terminals of the circuit protection device and is operable to limit an overvoltage to a predefined voltage limit.

Devices and methods for overvoltage protection

Devices include an impulse current generator that is configured to provide a direct impulse current (DIC) that includes a specified waveform to a test load during a test duration, a continuous power supply that is configured to provide a continuous power to the test load during the test duration, a trigger circuit that is configured to determine a trigger condition that corresponds to the DIC and to generate a trigger signal responsive to determining the trigger condition, and a current bypass circuit that is configured to receive the trigger signal generated by the trigger circuit and to conduct a majority portion of the DIC being conducted by the load responsive to the trigger signal.
