A rack assembly for a mine winning machine drive arrangement is described. The rack assembly is associated with a longwall conveyor along which a mine winning machine is movable by the drive arrangement. The rack assembly is constituted by a plurality of rack sections and a plurality of support members for connecting the rack sections to the longwall conveyor. Each of the rack sections has a respective downwardly-extending coupling pin at each end thereof, each of the coupling pins extending through an elongate slot in a respective support member with a predetermined amount of play. Each of the coupling pins is provided with a retaining member for preventing that coupling pin from moving out of the associated slot. The rack assembly is such that the rack sections of each adjacent pair of rack sections are relatively pivotable in vertical and horizontal directions, and are relatively movable to a predetermined extent in the longitudinal direction of the rack assembly.

Rack assembly

An electro-hydraulic control system for an underground mineral mining installation employs individual control assemblies and devices on a series of support units which are interconnected to one another and to a central control station via lines conveying electrical control signals. Manually-operable selector switches on the units enable groups of the support units to be operated in sequence at will by operating the switches of adjacent units outside the group.

Control systems for mineral mining installations

A rotatable cutting drum of a mineral mining machine is supported by a pivotable arm and is operably associated with a blade or the like which is positionable to assist in loading mineral detached by the drum. The blade is carried on a ring-like support which is itself mounted for pivoting about the axis of the drum to position the blade. Apparatus serves to couple the blade and its support selectively to the drum when it is desired to re-position the blade so that the latter moves around the axis of rotation of the drum with the drum itself. The apparatus is composed of piston and cylinder units provided in the blade support. The piston rods of these units extend outwardly from either side of the blade support and carry first and second abutment or friction rings. These respective friction rings either couple the blade support to the arm supporting the drum or to the drum. Hydraulic fluid is admitted to the units to bring the associated first friction ring into contact with the drum when the blade is to be re-positioned. The hydraulic force is opposed by restorative spring force which biases the pistons of the units so that the second friction ring normally clamps the blade support to the arm supporting the drum.

Apparatus for use with cutting drums of mineral machines

A shearer-type mineral winning machine has three-phase a.c. motors on its main body for driving cutting drums and for propelling the machine along a mineral face. The frequency of the a.c. power supplied to the motor which serves to move the machine is varied and controlled in dependence on the operation of the cutting drums. Electronic control means for monitoring the performance of the cutting drums and for controlling the frequency of the a.c. power supplied to the machine drive motor are located in a control station in a protected position in a gallery remote from the machine and power is supplied to the machine via cables and/or bus bars.
