A high power ultrasonic transducer is provided. In one embodiment, the transducer includes means for providing power in excess of three kilowatts. The transducer further includes an active element made from a magnetostrictive material and means for producing an electromagnetic field which extends through at least a portion of the active element. The active element is changeable between a first shape when in the absence of the electromagnetic field and a second shape when in the presence of the electromagnetic field. The transducer also includes means for providing an electrical signal to the means for producing an electromagnetic field and an acoustic element connected to the transducer for channeling ultrasonic energy to perform work. In one embodiment, an ultra-high power transducer is provided comprising a plurality of sub-motors, each containing an active element made from a smart material, wherein the sub-motors operate simultaneously to produce ultrasonic energy. The transducer in this embodiment further includes a cooling system connected to the transducers for cooling each active element, the cooling system utilizing a phase change medium. The transducer further includes a composite master wave-guide connected to the plurality of sub-motors, the master wave-guide reactive to the ultrasonic energy from the sub-motors, wherein the master wave-guide channels the ultrasonic energy to perform work.

High power ultrasonic transducers

A magnetic coupling system comprising a magnetic assembly for removably combing a base structure and a tool insert is described. This arrangement allows energy from a transducer located in the base structure to be transmitted through the magnetic assembly to the tool insert. In one embodiment, the magnetic assembly comprises one or more magnetic inserts located between the base structure and tool insert and a permanent magnet or an electromagnet located proximate to the one or more magnetic inserts. The permanent magnet can be axially polarized, radially polarized or polarized at any intermediate angle. In one embodiment, the two components being coupled are a wave guide in direct contact with an ultrasonic motor and a dental scaling tool. In this embodiment, vibrational motion is transferred from the acoustic extension to the tool insert.

Magnetic coupling system and method

A pressure wave generator for use down a bore hole having fluid therein adjacent a hydrocarbon-containing formation. The generator includes an elastomeric member sized for disposition in the bore hole. A periodic compressive force is exerted on the elastomeric member in a first direction so as to cause the elastomeric member to expand in a second direction and thus produce pressure waves in the fluid to increase the effective permeability of the hydrocarbon-containing formation. A method for using the generator is provided.
