Ceramic articles such as catalyst carriers that include a continuous matrix and a dispersed phase distributed within the matrix as a plurality of discrete regions are disclosed. The matrix and discreet regions have different dye penetration test values. The disclosure also relates to methods of making and characterizing ceramic articles, and to catalyst bodies including the ceramic articles.

The present invention relates to a regenerator including a packed bed of energy storage elements made of a material having the following chemical analysis: 25%&#x3c;FeO&#x3c;90%, 5%&#x3c;AlO&#x3c;30%, CaO&#x3c;20%, TiO&#x3c;25%, 3%&#x3c;SiO&#x3c;50%, Na2O&#x3c;10%, FeO+AlO+CaO+TiO+SiO+NaO&#x3e;80%, and other compounds: complement to 100%.

Regenerator

Disclosed is a population of ceramic particles that includes a plurality of individual, free flowing particles. The plurality has a total weight and particle size distribution. The effective width of the distribution is the difference between the distribution's dand dparticle sizes. The distribution's effective width exceeds 100 microns and includes three abutting and non-overlapping regions that include a first region, a second region, and a third region. The first region abuts the second region and the second region abuts the third region. The width of the second region is at least 25% of the effective width. The weight of particles in the second region does not exceed 15% of the plurality of particle's total weight. The weight of particles in the first region and the third region each exceed the weight of particles in the second region. Methods of making the populations of ceramic particles are also disclosed.

The invention provides an improved ceramic packing element () suited to use as a bed limiter having a generally uniform cross-section in the length (l) direction with the basic shape of a bow-tie and having a plurality of through passages () parallel to the length dimension (L).

The selectivity and activity of a silver-based olefin epoxidation catalyst is found to be a function of the pore size distribution in the alumina carrier on which it is deposited. Specifically it is found advantageous to provide a carrier which has a minimum of very large pores, (greater than 10 micrometers) and a water absorption of 35 to 55% and a surface area of at least 1.0 m /g. A method of making such carriers is also described.

Catalyst carriers

Ceramic mass and thermal transfer media suitable for use in thermal regenerative oxidizers made using a mixture of a ball clay, talc and optionally a dolomitic limestone have enhanced resistance to environments containing halogens and hydrogen halides. The media preferably comprises less than 0.25% by weight of alkali metal, expressed as the oxide, and has a cordierite: silica phase ratio of less than 1.2:1, as determined by X-ray diffraction.
