A device for designing knit products to be manufactured on a knitting machine includes at least one storage device for storing data required for the production of the knit products on the knitting machine; at least one display device for displaying design images for the knit products; and at least one input device for altering the design images. Data to be exchanged between the storage, input and display devices is processed to generate at least one knit image presentation and at least one corresponding thread course presentation for display as the design images on the display device, and one of the presentations is simultaneously correspondingly altered as the other is being altered by using the input device.

For producing a knitted product on a flat knitting machine with simultaneous supply of two threads of different elasticities to needles of the machine, for each stitch to be formed the length of the thread of the higher elasticity to be supplied to a needle is calculated from the supplied length of a thread of the lower elasticity and the data about the material property of the thread of the higher elasticity, and a feeding device is controlled for the thread of the higher elasticity in correspondence with the calculated thread length to be supplied.

A knitted article is produced on a flat knitting machine with a carriage and at least one cam system, wherein the carriage speed is controlled within a knitting row in dependence on pattern types produced by individual needles or needle groups, as well as on the properties of knitting thread or threads continuously so that the carriage at each location of the knitting row is moved with a maximum possible speed at which it is guaranteed that no knitting thread is torn.

Three-dimensional knitted catalyst gauzes made from noble metals have recently come into use for ammonia oxidation and other gaseous reactions. Wires of platinum containing 4 to 12% rhodium or 4 to 12% of palladium and rhodium (4 to 12% being in reference to the sum of palladium and rhodium and not the percent values for each individually) and wires of palladium containing 2 to 15% nickel or 2 to 15% copper or 2 to 15% of nickel and copper (2 to 15% being in reference to the sum of nickel and copper) and having a diameter of 50 to 120 .mu.m, a tensile strength of 900 to 1050 N/mm.sup.2 and an elastic limit of 0.5 to 3% are used for the knitting of round nets for use as catalysts in the oxidation of ammonia and as recovery nets for platinum metals. A flat knitting machine with a gauge of 3.63 to 1.81 mm is also used whereby the loop length is 2 to 6 mm and wherein the loop or width gauge corresponds with the knitting machine gauge so as to provide a loop width of 1.81 to 3.63 mm.
