A method for treating leather with a low fogging, substantive, retan fatliquor containing a dispersion of a selected amphiphilic copolymer, substantially free from organic solvents, formed from a predominant amount of at least one hydrophobic monomer and a minor amount of at least one copolymerizable hydrophilic monomer. The method produces leather having desirable strength and softness qualities and particularly reduced fogging characteristics, the leather being particularly suitable for use in vehicle upholstery.

A method of improving the strength, temper and water resistance of leather utilizing selected amphiphilic copolymers is provided. The amphiphilic copolymers are formed from a predominant amount of at least one hydrophobic monomer and a minor amount of at least one copolymerizable hydrophilic monomer. The method is particularly useful as a one step substitute for conventional retanning and fatliquoring treatment steps. In a preferred embodiment the amphiphilic copolymers also provide a significant degree of water resistance to the leather.

A method is disclosed for inhibiting the polymerization of acrylic and methacrylic acids at ambient or above ambient temperature, such as during preparation, purification or storage of the acids under substantially anaerobic conditions, by adding thereto a polymerization inhibiting amount of a compound having the formula:

The removal of the polymerization inhibitor p benzoquinone from acrylic and methacrylic monomers is effectuated by adding to the inhibited monomers either prior to distillation or during distillation in a distillation zone, sufficient amounts of a monoalkyl substituted hydroquinone, a 2,5-dialkyl substituted hydroquinone or a dihydroxynaphthalene to prevent the benzoquinone from co-distilling with the monomer or to convert the benzoquinone in a distillation zone to a non-volatile compound during the distillation so that the converted benzoquinone returns to the feed flask.

A continuous process for the preparation of acrylic and methacrylic acid esters by conventional esterification, where sufficient substantially anhydrous product ester is added to the esterification reactor to satisfy the ester/alkanol and ester/water azeotropes, the low boiling azeotropes are recovered, thereby removing crude product ester, unreacted alkanol and water of esterification from the esterification reactor, while leaving substantially all the high-boiling unreacted acrylic or methacrylic acid in the reactor.
