A dispersion containing a high-surface-area, pyrogenically-produced aluminium oxide with a surface area and BET of more than 115 m/g and a Sears number of more than 8 ml/2 g, is produced by mixing a high-surface-area, pyrogenically-produced aluminium oxide having a BET specific surface area of more than 115 m/g and a Sears number of more than 8 ml/2 g, with water, setting a pH value of 2 to 11 (preferably 3 to 8) and dispersing the mixture by the introduction of controlled shearing forces. It can be used for the production of Inkjet media, digital imaging products and other printing medium.

Dispersion of aluminium oxide

Aqueous dispersions of a pyrogenically-produced aluminum oxide are prepared form a mixture containing water, additives and a high-surface-area pyrogenically-produced aluminum oxide with a BET specific surface area of more than 115 m/g and a Sears number of more than 8 ml/2 g using controlled high shearing conditions. Prior to subjecting the mixture to high shear conditions, the pH of the mixture is adjusted to a value between of 2 to 11 (preferably 3 to 8). The aqueous dispersion has a mean particle size distribution of d&#x3c;150 nm. These dispersions are useful in the production of Inkjet media, digital imaging products and other printing media and result in high color densities, photo-realistic reproductions and particularly good print and gloss quality.

Pyrogenically produced aluminum-silicon mixed oxides with a BET surface of more than 300 m/g and a composition of 0.01 to 99.99% by wt. AIO, remainder SiOare produced in accordance with the method of flame pyrolysis or preferably flame hydrolysis by a joint combustion of the gaseous raw substances. They can be used to produce coating colors, especially for inkjet papers or inkjet foils or other inkjet materials.

The present invention provides an aqueous dispersion containing at least two powder types selected from one or more metal oxide powders and/or one or more non-metal oxide powder. The present invention also provides a coating composition containing this dispersion, an inkjet recording medium containing the coating composition, and methods of making the same.

Dispersions of pyrogenic oxides, doped using an aerosol, are prepared by mixing the oxide with a suspending agent and milling. The dispersions can be used to prepare inkjet paper.

Dispersions containing pyrogenic oxides

Pyrogenically produced aluminum oxide, in which the BET specific surface area is greater than 115 m /g and the Sears index is over 8 ml/2 g and the dibutyl phthalate absorption as a powder measured with a 16 g weighed portion is not measurable, is produced by means of flame oxidation or preferably flame hydrolysis, whereby a vaporizable aluminum compound is used as starting material. The aluminum oxide can be used as an ink-absorbing substance in inkjet media and also as a filler, as a substrate, as a catalytically active substance, as a starting material for the production of dispersions, as a polishing material (CMP applications), as a ceramic raw material, in the electronics industry, in the cosmetics industry, as an additive in the silicone and rubber industry, to adjust the rheology of liquid systems, as a heat stabilizer, in the paint industry.
