A downhole system includes a safety valve system. The safety valve system includes a tubular housing having a hydraulic control chamber, and a lock-open communication sleeve within the tubular housing. The sleeve is longitudinally movable with respect to the tubular housing. The sleeve has a downhole end portion configured to abut and enact downhole movement of a flow tube. The sleeve further has a radial communication sort alignable with the hydraulic control chamber. A method of communicating and locking open the safety valve includes using the sleeve.

A recess is provided at the periphery of the flapper so that a corner that defines this recess engages an o-ring seal in a seat for the flapper. A reduced contact area of the flapper on the o-ring seal results in increased pressure over the actual contact area. The pressure applied over the contact area also forces a distortion in the o-ring that has a part of the o-ring not restrained due to the presence of the recess moving out of the surrounding o-ring groove so that the corner on the flapper pinches the o-ring that now is partly in and partly extending from its surrounding groove. Sealing is obtained at lower differential pressures and the o-ring is better fixated as a result of the pinch effect of the corner on the flapper.

A valve assembly, including a seat and a flapper complementarily formed with respect to the seat for creating a seal at an interface therebetween. At least one shim is operatively disposed in the valve assembly for altering a position of the flapper relative to the seat in at least one direction for aligning the flapper and the seat at the interface. A method of aligning the flapper and seat of a valve assembly is also included.

A shock absorbing system has a nose assembly that is formed to inwardly collapse on impact and is guided by a sleeve that can slide with the nose as the nose collapses or can extend for a portion of the length of the nose while being held fixed. In the latter instance the nose can have a leading end that has a biasing member in a resilient material so that on impact some of the shock is taken up by compression of the biasing member with subsequent extension of the biasing member retracting the resilient covering so that it is less likely to bind in the surrounding tubular. The leading end of the sleeve or the resilient material encasing the biasing member also soften the blow to a closed ball when the tool is dropped so that the ball surface is less likely to mar.

The tool can run in and latch another tool such as a ball valve into a packer, for example. It has the capability of operating the valve while still engaged to the valve housing. Once the valve is operated and released a pressure test can be conducted while the tool is still engaged to the valve housing. After that a predetermined applied force allows release from the valve housing without the valve shifting mechanism still engaged. In a different configuration the tool can be a simple pulling tool to remove the valve housing without shifting it. The tool has a rotational lock to allow release from a packer by turning to the right. In another configuration it can be a latch tool for a production string that shifts the valve as it releases when the production string is pulled.

The problem of flappers that will not close due to high velocity gas rushing past and creating a vortex that has zones of high pressure pressing the flapper against the force of the torsion spring is reduced or overcome with modifications in the passage through a subsurface safety valve so as to reduce the intensity of the vortex to allow the torsion spring to pivot the flapper to closed position. Various shapes are inserted adjacent the flapper base to create turbulence to minimize or prevent the vortex and the associated pressure increases that would otherwise prevent flapper closure with the flow tube retracted. Inserts that create turbulence are placed in a recess that in part holds the flapper when it is rotated to the open position.

A pressure equalizing system allows flow past an upper seal on a movable member downhole that in turn allows pressure to be delivered from uphole into what had previously been an isolated low pressure zone. The pressure differential across the member is equalized before attempting to move the member into another position. The member is a ball in a ball valve for subterranean use.

Disclosed herein is a safety valve with a chemical injection configuration. The device includes a hydraulic fluid pressure operated piston at the housing. The device further includes a flow tube in operable communication with the piston and a chemical injection configuration disposed within the housing. Further disclosed herein is a method of maintaining the operation of a safety valve by injecting chemical fluid through a configuration within the safety valve. Still further disclosed herein is check valve. The check valve includes a seal, a dart having a closed head and sealable against the seal, one or more flutes on the dart, and a spring applying a biasing force to the dart to a sealing position, that force being overcomeable by a fluid pressure acting in a direction opposing the spring force.

Disclosed herein is a decelerating device. The device includes, a body movably engagable within a tubular, a mandrel longitudinally movably disposed at the body, and at least one deceleration element disposed at the body in operable communication with the mandrel such that longitudinal movement of the mandrel with respect to the body causes controlled radial movement of the at least one deceleration element to decelerate the decelerating device in relation to the downhole tubular.

Disclosed herein is a communication and lock open device which includes a lock open portion including a latch configured to engage a shifting profile on a closure member of a safety valve. Further included is a communication portion configured to rotationally align a cutter with a non-annular hydraulic bore in the safety valve and axially cut into the hydraulic bore with the cutter. Also disclosed is a method for replacing the function of a safety valve while employing an original control line including running a communication and lock open tool in a wellbore, locating the tool in a tubing retrievable safety valve and shearing a thread in the valve to render moveable a closure member of the tubing retrievable safety valve. The method includes shifting the closure member to lock the member in an open position, orienting a cutter and establishing fluid communication with a bore of the valve.

Control system communication and lock open tool and method for locking open a safety valve and communicating with surface

A lock open device for a flapper is disclosed. The tool engages in the sub-surface safety valve (SSSV) body and rotates the flapper to the open position, without shifting the flow tube. The flapper base is preferably held by a shearable thread and has a groove for engagement by the tool. The tool jars down on the flapper base to shear the thread and force the held open flapper into a retaining groove. Optionally, a penetrating tool can be connected so that, in a single trip, the flapper can be locked open and the pressurized control system can be accessed. Shearing the thread allows the flow tube spring to bias the held open flapper into its retaining groove.

Lock open and control system access apparatus and method for a downhole safety valve

An equalizer valve for a flapper in an SSV has one embodiment where the plunger body is covered with a lubricious material in the bore in the flapper to counteract wear caused by off-center contact with the plunger by the flow tube. In another embodiment the flow tube and the plunger have matching angled surfaces to reduce the resultant moment of the plunger from offset contact of the flow tube. In another embodiment the flow tube contacts the plunger on center to eliminate a resultant moment, which can cause wear in the flapper bore or to the plunger.
