An automated banking machine which dispenses cash and includes a mechanism for accepting deposited items. Deposited items may be provided to the machine in envelopes which are first passed to a user from an envelope storage area () in the machine through a transport () and which are presented to the user through an opening (). A user may thereafter include deposit items in the dispensed envelope. The deposited items are passed through the opening () and are deposited in a deposit-holding container (). The deposited items may be marked by an inkjet printer with indicia corresponding to the transaction or properties of the deposited item. The operation of the printer is caused by a controller () which controls the operation responsive to one or more environmental parameters.

An automated banking machine () determines consecutive receipt jam event indications, involving at least two receipts, prior to generating a receipt jam signal. The machine, upon determining a jam event involving a first receipt, implements a jam annunciation delay routine. The routine delays generation of a receipt jam signal until at least the next receipt is also determined to be involved in a receipt jam event indication. The delay provides the opportunity for a user to clear the indicated receipt jam prior to generation of a receipt jam signal.

An automated banking machine is operative to dispense cash to authorized users. The user interface of the machine includes features for detection of fraudulent activities at the machine. Sensors are provided for detecting the installation of unauthorized card reading devices adjacent the card reader. Vibration sensors are used to detect the installation of unauthorized card reading or bill trap devices. A machine controller or other processor is programmed to detect events or circumstances which may indicate that improper activity is occurring. Cameras are used to capture images of the user interface. Changes in the images are analyzed by a computer to detect the installation of unauthorized devices.

An automated banking machine () includes a lockable first fascia portion () which when unlocked enables access to a chest lock input device (), inputs to which enable opening a chest door () of the machine. Opening the first fascia portion also enables access to an actuator () which enables moving a second fascia portion () for conducting service activities. A baffle structure () is positioned on the housing adjacent the second fascia portion to enable cooling air flow within the housing of the machine and to prevent the introduction of moisture into the housing. A controller () in the machine selectively illuminates light emitting devices () for purposes of facilitating user operation of the machine. Sensing devices () adjacent a card reader slot () on the machine enables the controller to detect the presence of a fraud device or unauthorized card reading devices.

A system indicates fault conditions in an automated banking machine apparatus. A journal printer () is supplied with paper from a paper supply (). A paper take-up device () receives paper from the printer. Movement of the take-up device is sensed by a detector (). The detector is connected to an electronic circuit () including a processor (). Fault signals are generated by the electronic circuit responsive to the detector sensing conditions representative of a paper jam and a paper break.

A printer apparatus ( ) includes a removable print ribbon cartridge ( ). The print cartridge includes a ribbon ( ) which is movable by a transmission mechanism ( ). A ribbon drive member ( ) in said transmission mechanism includes frangible tabs ( ). The frangible tabs break responsive to encountering a resistance to movement of said ribbon above a predetermined level.

A statement printer in an automated teller machine includes a guide block (86) which supports a print head (110). The print head prints on paper (130) which is moved adjacent thereto as the guide block moves transversely relative to the paper. A cutter disk (76) is supported by the guide block. The cutter disk is journaled on an arm (82). The arm is connected to an actuating lever (92). The actuating lever is engageable with stops (106) near the transverse extremes of travel of the guide block. Selective engagement of the actuating lever with the stops moves the cutter disk between cutting and non-cutting positions. Cam members (108) adjacent to the stops dispose the cutter disk away from a cooperating cutter bar (74) as the cutter disk moves between the cutting and non-cutting positions.

A printer apparatus (10) includes a removable print ribbon cartridge (18). The print cartridge includes a ribbon (20) which is movable by a transmission mechanism (49). A ribbon drive member (65) in said transmission mechanism includes frangible tabs (101). The frangible tabs break responsive to encountering a resistance to movement of said ribbon. The frangible tabs limit the force that may be encountered by a motor (168) used to advance the ribbon thereby preventing damage to the motor and associated drive components and circuitry in the event of a malfunction.

A statement printer of an automated teller machine includes a top plate (16) pivotally mounted on a pair of spaced side walls (12). The top plate supports a ribbon cartridge (18) thereon. The cartridge includes a pair of downward extending projections (38) which are accepted in a longitudinally extending recess (24) in the top plate. Notches (40) and the longitudinally extending projections engage a leaf spring (28) to position the cartridge thereon. The top plate further includes a pair of finger projections (30) having slots (34) for accepting wing projections (36) that extend from the sides of the cartridge. The guided relationship between the downward extending projections and wing projections on the cartridge and the longitudinal recess and the slots on the top plate enable the cartridge to be guided into position on and off the top plate which facilitates changing the cartridge in the confined space inside an automated teller machine.

A statement printer of an automated banking machine includes a lower roll shaft (118) having round paper engaging rolls (120) thereon. An upper roll shaft (122) has flat spot rolls (124, 125, 126, 127) thereon. The flat spot rolls are positioned in opposed relation with the round rolls. The round rolls are moved by a drive mechanism (128, 129). A paper sheet (130) is moved between the round rolls and the flat spot rolls. As the paper sheet is moved between the rolls lateral stresses in the paper are relieved and creases and puckers in the paper sheet are reduced.
