A bed for patient care having a waste disposal system. The bed includes a back, seat and two leg sections for supporting the patient. These sections of the bed may be raised and lowered and tilted. The leg sections may be moved independently for use with patients having one leg immobilized. The seat section includes two panels which part to permit a waste canister to be raised to interface with the buttocks of the patient. An audible signal alerts the patient prior to this action. The waste canister provides a directable bidet wash, and an air drying feature. Gelling material within the canister swells during the bidet function to cover and seal the waste. The entire canister may be sealed and disposed of.

A safety pad or mattress such as for use in a crib prevents sudden infant death syndrome by ensuring an oxygenated breathing space for the infant. Reticulated foam is made into a pad or a mattress and may be covered with a fitted open weave fabric covering. An embedded air tube is interconnected with an air pump which circulates fresh, i.e., oxygenated, air in the breathing space. The air pump may be inside or outside the mattress. The forced air circulation flushes any exhaled carbon dioxide from the breathing space, even when the infant is face down or otherwise in a prone position on the mattress, to prevent carbon dioxide poisoning. The air circulation flow rate is limited to prevent infant cooling. A pad bladder for similar function may be provided having a layer of reticulated foam sandwiched between upper and lower air impervious sheets and dispersing air introduced therebetween. The upper sheet has a pattern of air holes for release of the dispersed air. Two or more zones with different air flow rates may be established with different air hole patterns, so that a higher risk infant can receive a relatively higher air flow rate. A patient care surface uses a low air loss bladder with a sandwiched layer of reticulated foam as an air dispersing element and a still higher air flow rate for intentionally cooling and drying a patient, which aids the skin and other general condition of the patient.

A pressure relief support system utilizes a self-adjusting approach to maintaining generally constant pressure in fluid support bladders. A constant force, such as from a constant force linear spring or from a counterweight system, is applied directly to a fluid support bladder or to a reservoir in fluid communication with such bladder. Plural self-adjusting arrangements may be provided in a single device for fabricating a support body with sectionalized support. Such arrangements may be incorporated into mattress support systems or into seating arrangements or other alternative uses. By appropriately selecting system components, such as the amount of the constant force applied, the original volume of fluid to which the force is applied, and the reservoir size, pressure dispersion for a patient or supported object of any type may be controlled at a predetermined generally constant point. By utilizing the potential energy of a constant force linear spring or equivalent arrangement, a self-adjusting system and methodology is provided which does not require any form of electronic control system for receiving sensory feedback or for operating pressure pumps or valving systems responsive to any such feedback.

Self-adjusting pressure relief support system and methodology

A marine craft fuel alert system is operative during a given time period, to compare actual fuel capacity measurements with selected fuel tank capacity reference values, to permit timely intervention. Used with a relatively high reference value and operative during fuel loading, the system and methodology gives a warning to a fuel input agent (i.e., person controlling fuel loading) in sufficient time for the agent to terminate fuel loading and prevent environmental pollution by fuel overfill spillage. Conversely, the system and methodology, with appropriate modifications, can be used to sense and warn of predetermined low fuel level conditions. The system can be integrally incorporated into an original equipment marine craft system or retrofit thereto. Electrical interconnections may extend to marine craft ignition system interdiction during operation of the fuel loading monitoring and warning.

An air tube is embedded in the pad or mattress and interconnected with an air pump which circulates fresh, i.e., oxygenated, air in a breathing space formed beneath an infant by the air permeable mattress. The forced air circulation flushes any exhaled carbon dioxide from the breathing space, even when the infant is face down or otherwise in a prone position on the mattress, to prevent carbon dioxide poisoning. The materials of the fabric covering and air permeable mattress permit any fluids regurgitated from the infant to drain away from the infant's face. A relatively tight fit for the fitted covering obviates loose fitting sheets to further prevent potential entanglement and suffocation of a recumbent infant.

Sudden infant death syndrome prevention apparatus and method

Method and apparatus for treating a patient by electrotherapy and fluidized bed thermal therapy. A body portion of a patient is submerged in a fluidizable bed of solid particles, and the bed is selectively fluidized and de-fluidized as desired while controlling the temperature of the bed of solid particles. Electrotherapy treatment is applied to the portion of the body of the patient submerged in the bed of solid particles through electrodes attached to the body part which are connected to an electrical generator which produces radio frequency signals in continuous or modulated modes. The electrotherapy and fluidized bed thermal therapy may be applied consecutively or concurrently to the body part for treatment thereof.

A collection, storage and disposal system for human wastes. An externally positionable patient interface directs wastes through a conduit to a storage container. Accumulated wastes are sealed within the storage container to prevent cross-contamination. The patient interface is extendable through an aperture formed within a seat portion of a support structure which can be converted between bed and chair configurations. A mattress has a foam insert which may be selectively inflated to maintain desired supporting pressure for the patient and to provide a resilient support surface should deflation of the mattress occur.

Apparatus and methods for closed collection of human wastes

An oil and water separator for separating oil from water collected in a bilge of a boat prior to discharging the water overboard. A reservoir is provided for receiving the mixture of oil and water from the bilge. The oil separates from the water and floats on top of the water. When only water is positioned between a pair of spaced electrical probes carried in the reservoir, such causes a drain valve to be opened to drain the water from the reservoir. As the water is drained from the reservoir, the oil floating on top of the water will come between the probes and close the valve, stopping the draining of water from the bottom of the reservoir. A mixture of oil and water is pumped from a tank carried in the bilge at an intermittent rate so that the mixture is allowed sufficient time to separate in the reservoir.
