An improved method for carboxylating styrenic resins and particularly impact-modified styrenic resins such as ABS resins, by melt-processing a mixture comprising the styrenic resin, an ethylenically-unsaturated carboxylic compound, and, optionally, a free-radical generator.

Method for preparing carboxylated styrenic resins

Thermoplastic blend compositions comprise a polyphenylene ether resin, a polyamide resin and a compatibilizing agent present in an amount sufficient to effect compatibilization of the polyphenylene ether resin and the polyamide resin. The compatibilizing agent comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of tetracarboxylic acids of aromatic and alicyclic compounds and dianhydride derivatives thereof, and halogen substituted phthalic anhydrides.

Polyphenylene ether-polyamide blends

Thermoplastic blend compositions comprise a polyamide, a carboxylated polyphenylene ether resin and an impact modifier. The carboxylated polyphenylene ether resin is the product of melt mixing a mixture consisting essentially of polyphenylene ether resin and a minor amount of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid compound. The impact modifier may comprise a graft of a vinyl aromatic polymer on a rubbery substrate; a vinyl aromatic-conjugated diene-vinyl aromatic triblock polymer; a carboxylated vinyl aromatic-conjugated diene-vinyl aromatic triblock polymer; a carboxylated alpha-olefin polymer; a copolymer of an alpha-olefin compound and an unsaturated carboxylic compound; a graft of a rigid acrylic polymer on a rubber substrate; a linear low density polyethylene; or mixtures thereof.

Thermoplastic impact modified polyamide-polyphenylene ether composition

Thermoplastic blend compositions comprise a polyphenylene ether resin, a polyamide resin and a compatibilizing agent present in an amount sufficient to effect compatibilization of the polyphenylene ether resin and the polyamide resin. The compatibilizing agent comprises a compound selected from the group consisting of tetracarboxylic acids of aromatic and alicyclic compounds and dianhydride derivatives thereof, and halogen substituted phthalic anyhydrides.

Compositions comprising a carboxylated PPE resin and a polyamide having good compatibility and impact properties. The carboxylated PPE resin/polyamide alloys are produced by a process wherein a mixture consisting essentially of the PPE resin and a minor amount of an unsaturated carboxylic compound are first melt processed, then compounded with the polyamide.

Thermoplastic polyamide--polyphenylene ether compositions

An improved method for making alloys of styrenic resins and polyamides. The styrenic resin is first melt-processed with an ethylenically-unsaturated carboxylic compound, optionally in the presence of a free-radical generator, then combined with the polyamide under melt-processing conditions. The compositions remain thermally-processable and generally exhibit good impact properties with little or no delamination.

Alloys of styrenic resins and polyamides

Melt-processing a mixture of a polyphenylene ether (PPE) and an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic compound, in the absence of an added free radical initiator such as a peroxide, serves to introduce carboxyl functionality into the PPE resin. The resulting carboxylated PPE resins are useful in forming alloys with more polar resins such as polyamides.

Carboxylated phenylene ether resins

Styrenic resins having incorporated therein from 0.5 to 15 pbw of a copolymerizable, ethlenically unsaturated carbonamide such as acrylamide form alloys with polyamides which exhibit improved compatibility, higher heat distortion temperatures and improved Izod impact values over the range of from 5 to 95 wt. % polyamide and 95 to 5 wt. % modified styrenic resin. The alloys may further include unmodified styrenic resins, as well as conventional stabilizers, fillers and the like.

Multi-layered composites and laminates comprising a layer of a polyamide resin and a layer of a carboxylated SAN copolymer resin. The composites and laminates exhibit excellent interlayer adhesion and are thermoformable.
