A portable neutron generator is provided that does not utilize liquid cooling. The portable neutron generator includes a vacuum chamber housing defining a vacuum chamber and an ion beam inlet. The portable neutron generator also includes a rotating target positioned within the vacuum chamber. The ion beam inlet is oriented to receive ions such that the ions impinge upon the rotating target to cause neutrons to be emitted. The rotating target comprises a copper alloy. The portable neutron generator also includes a motor core positioned within the vacuum chamber and coupled to the rotating target. A motor stator is electromagnetically coupled with the motor core. The motor core is configured to rotate the rotating target at greater than 200 Hz during operation.

Fabrication of a multi-layer X-ray source is disclosed using bulk structures to fabricate a multi-layer target structure. In one implementation, layers of X-ray generating material, such as tungsten, are interleaved with thermally conductive layers, such as diamond layers. To prevent delamination of the layers, various mechanical, chemical, and/or structural approaches may also be employed.

The present disclosure relates to the production and use of a multi-layer X-ray source target. In certain implementations, layers of X-ray generating material may be interleaved with thermally conductive layers. To prevent delamination of the layers, various mechanical, chemical, and structural approaches are related, including approaches for reducing the internal stress associated with the deposited layers and for increasing binding strength between layers.

A method of assembling an airfoil includes depositing a bonding material on a first end of the tip portion and shaping the bonding material to form a first plurality of features. The first plurality of features correspond to a second plurality of features on a second end of the body portion. The method also includes positioning the first end relative to the second end such that the first plurality of features and the second plurality of features interlock. The method further includes coupling the first end of the tip portion to the second end of the body portion.

Method for joining wires using low resistivity joints is provided. More specifically, methods of joining one or more wires having superconductive filaments, such as magnesium diboride filaments, are provided. The wires are joined by a low resistivity joint to form wires of a desired length for applications, such in medical imaging applications.

A focal track region of an x-ray anode in an example is electrochemically etched. In a further example, an x-ray anode comprises a thermally-compliant focal track region for impingement of electrons from an x-ray cathode to create an x-ray source. The thermally-compliant focal track region comprises a pattern of discrete relative expanses and gaps.

A multi-filament superconducting wire in which the filaments comprise zirconia-stabilized ultra-fine grain NbSn. The superconducting wire is formed by wire-drawing a preform comprising a metallic matrix and at least one niobium alloy rod having zirconium and oxygen in solid solution and heat treating the drawn wire in the presence of tin to yield at least one continuous filament comprising ultra-fine grain NbSn having semi-coherent ZrOprecipitates disposed therein. The ZrOprecipitates serve to stabilize the ultra-fine grain microstructure of the NbSn at temperatures up to 1100&#xb0; C. and allows NbSn to maintain the ultra-fine grain microstructure when heat treated at temperatures that are greater than those previously used. By using higher temperatures to form NbSn, the time required for heat treatment can be significantly reduced.

A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system having a vacuum vessel positioned about an imaging volume, one or more high temperature superconducting coils positioned within the vacuum vessel, and a cryocooler coupled to the vacuum vessel to operate the superconducting coil at a temperature above 10 K. At least one gradient coil is positioned between an imaging volume and the superconducting coil without any thermal shielding interposed between the gradient coil and the superconducting coil. A method of forming an MRI system includes forming at least one winding of the main field generating coils with high temperature superconducting material, positioning the winding in a vessel for receiving cryogenic fluid, and positioning a gradient coil between the imaging volume and the winding without placing a thermal radiation shield between the gradient coil and the winding.

Disclosed herein is method for making a wire comprising contacting a first end of a first superconducting wire with a second end of a second superconducting wire, wherein the superconducting wire comprises a superconducting filament having a superconducting composition comprising magnesium diboride; heating the first end of the first superconducting wire with the second end of the second superconducting wire at a point to form a joint, wherein the superconducting filament having the superconducting composition is in continuous electrical contact with any other part of the superconducting filament after the formation of the joint.

A system and method for repairing defects such as bumper holes, cracks, freckles and inclusions, in a cast article, such as a turbine component. The system comprises a device for locating a defect in a cast article, a repair material that is disposable at a defect site, at least one heat source capable of heating the repair material and a portion of the cast article to a molten state. The method of using the system comprises locating a defect in the cast article, providing a repair material to the defect site, melting the repair material and cast article at the defect site, and cooling the molten repair material and portion of the casting article such that they resolidify and fuse together. The method may further comprise removing a portion of the cast article at the defect site, removal of excess repair material and inspecting the cast article following repair of the defect.

A brazed X-ray target includes a metallic cap and a graphite back including a nonlinear record groove attached thereto along a stepped surface. An upper corner joint of the stepped surface is distanced from a cap outer edge and a focal track where the maximum heat is generated during use of the target. The graphite back is extended outward toward the cap outer edge to increase a thermal storage of the graphite, and a recess is formed into the cap to maintain a selected moment of inertia of the target and thereby maintain the rotordynamics of a given X-ray tube.
