In an embodiment, a skip read command is received that requests transfer of a requested block from a storage device and that requests non-transfer of a skipped block from the storage device. The skip read command specifies a skip mask that comprises an identification of a location of the requested block relative to a location of the skipped block at the storage device. In response to the skip read command, the requested block and the skipped block are transferred from the storage device by creating a read command that requests transfer of the requested block and the skipped block and sending the read command to the storage device. In various embodiments, the skipped block is transferred to a temporary buffer and not transferred to a destination buffer, or the skipped block is transferred to the destination buffer, but overwritten by a transfer of the requested block to the destination buffer.

Emulating a skip read command

An apparatus, program product and method for managing a number of physical connections to a peripheral device. A multipath driver provides a logical connection interface to a client. This interface allows the client to efficiently access the peripheral device over one or more of the physical connections. In so doing, the logical connection interface associates connections with a primary connection, deletes inactive connections from memory, as well as updates and uses a list of active connections to seamlessly route data to the peripheral device.

A method for recovering a computer system from a loadsource direct access storage device located at a remote location. In accordance with the method and system of the present invention, after a catastrophic damage and the installation of a local loadsource direct access storage device, an indicator within the local loadsource direct access storage device is set such that the local loadsource direct access storage device cannot be utilized for initial program load. Thereafter, the contents of the entire loadsource direct access storage device located at a remote location are copied to the replacement local loadsource direct access storage device. The indicator within the replacement local loadsource direct access storage device is reset such that the replacement local loadsource direct access storage device can be utilized for initial program load again. Finally, an initial program load is performed from the replacement local loadsource direct access storage device.

Method and system for recovering a computer system from a loadsource located at a remote location

Method and apparatus for managing data on DASD units to improve system performance comprises monitoring portions of data on a plurality of DASD units to determine the times the data is accessed within a given time period, and characterizing accessed data portions of a DASD unit as HOT and COLD data. The DASD units are monitored to determine the number of times each unit is accessed within a time period to develop utilization factors reflective of the number of times the DASD unit is accessed during the time period. HOT and COLD data is moved between DASD units based on the utilization factors of the DASD units.
