A surgical stapler including a hollow shaft and a tube slidable axially within the shaft between a forward position, where one end of the tube projects beyond a free end of the shaft to enter a puncture site in a blood vessel and a rearward position, where the end of the locator tube is retracted within the shaft. A surgical staple straddles the tube and is slidable thereon forwardly towards an anvil against which the staple may be deformed to staple together the opposite edges of the puncture site. A cam mechanism drives the staple forwardly along the tube into deforming engagement with the anvil and at the same time retracts the tube into the shaft in time to allow the legs of the staple to close onto the puncture site.

Surgical stapler

A surgical stapling device is provided having a shaft, a surgical staple slidable longitudinally within the shaft, and a staple-firing mechanism for driving the staple towards the forward end of the housing, bending the staple to bring the free ends of the legs towards one another to close the staple, and releasing the closed staple. The device also includes a blood locator tube slidable longitudinally within the shaft between an initial extended position wherein a forward end of the tube projects beyond the forward end of the shaft to enter a puncture site in a liquid-carrying vessel in a human or animal, thereby to locate the forward end of the shaft at the puncture site, and a retracted position wherein the tube is retracted into the housing in coordination with the closure of the staple. The tube has a longitudinal slot extending rearwardly from its forward end and the back of the staple is accommodated transversely in the slot.

Surgical stapling device

A device for locating a puncture hole in a liquid-carrying vessel such as a blood vessel comprises a hollow tube having front and rear openings respectively at opposite ends of the tube to allow the tube to slide along a guidewire passing through the tube. The front opening comprises a first portion A for slidably accommodating the guidewire and a second portion B to allow liquid from the vessel to flow back through the tube. The device is configured, e.g. by a constriction C, such that a guidewire at least above a certain diameter in the first portion A of the front opening is restrained against moving into the second portion B. Alternatively, the first and second portions A, B of the front opening may be independent of one another.

Device for locating a puncture hole in a liquid-carrying vessel

A surgical staple is provided having a base portion and a respective leg extending from each end of the base portion and terminating at a free end. The base portion is deformable to bring the free ends of the legs together to penetrate a liquid-carrying vessel at the site of a puncture and hold the opposite edges of the puncture together. The base portion and legs lie in substantially a common plane except for a center portion ( C) of the base portion which is deformed in a loop in a direction perpendicular to the common plane. The center portion of the staple allows the staple to straddle a blood locator tube projecting from the end of a stapler, so that the staple can be closed at the center of a puncture wound in which the tube is located. A method for stapling is also provided.
