A method includes generating a mixed optical beam using an optical phased array that includes multiple array elements, where each array element includes an antenna element and a phase modulator. The mixed optical beam includes a combination of (i) an output optical beam produced by the optical phased array and (ii) a reference optical beam. The method also includes capturing near-field measurements of the mixed optical beam, where the near-field measurements are captured while scanning phase angles of the phase modulators. The method further includes generating calibration data based on the near-field measurements, where the calibration data identifies phase and amplitude responses of the array elements. In addition, the method includes storing the calibration data.

Photonic integrated circuit-based optical phased array calibration technique

A scalable independent unit cell device architecture may include a phase-shifting element and a phase shift driver both integrated within the unit cell device. The phase shift driver may be coupled to the phase-shifting element and the phase shift driver may independently control the phase-shifting element to produce an optical beam having a desired phase. The unit cell device may further include an optical antenna that outputs the beam having the desired phase. The unit cell device may be formed as an opto-electronic hybrid optimized to leverage direct bond hybridization (DBH) to attach an electronic integrated circuit wafer to a side of a photonic integrated circuit wafer. The resulting unit cell device (i.e., 24 microns) may tightly integrate individual element-level phase control, which may be implemented within large-scale two-dimensional photonic arrays with hemispherical beam steering.

A device includes a photonic integrated circuit having an optical phased array. The optical phased array includes multiple array elements, where each array element includes (i) an antenna element configured to transmit or receive optical signals and (ii) a phase modulator configured to phase-shift the optical signals transmitted or received by the antenna element. The device also includes multiple digital register in integrated circuit (DRIIC) cells, where each DRIIC cell is associated with one of the array elements. The DRIIC cells are configured to receive digital inputs and to provide outputs to the phase modulators of the associated array elements in order to control the phase-shifts of the optical signals transmitted or received by the antenna elements based on the digital inputs.

A device includes a photonic integrated circuit (PIC), which includes an optical phased array. The optical phased array includes multiple array elements, where each array element includes (i) an antenna element configured to transmit or receive optical signals and (ii) a phase modulator configured to modulate the optical signals transmitted or received by the antenna element. The PIC also includes at least one of (i) a source laser configured to generate optical energy, where the antenna elements are configured to transmit the optical signals based on the optical energy, and (ii) a receiver configured to receive and process the optical signals received by the antenna elements.
