A surgical stapling apparatus (stapler) including a housing, elongated member, and a reload is disclosed. A cartridge is configured to selectively couple to a first jaw member of the reload and includes one or more resilient members thereon. An anvil operably supported on a second jaw member of the reload is configured to compress one or more fasteners ejected from the cartridge. The anvil includes one or more locking members thereon. A knife is configured to translate through the cartridge and anvil when the first and second jaw members are in a closed configuration. Engagement between the knife and the resilient member(s) causes the resilient member(s) to move from an initial configuration that allows the knife to travel distally past the locking member(s) to a final configuration that allows the locking member(s) to engage the knife.

An end effector assembly for use in a surgical robotic system includes an anvil assembly and a staple cartridge assembly operably coupled to the anvil assembly. The staple cartridge assembly includes a chassis defining an elongate channel therein, a staple cartridge body configured for removable receipt in the elongate channel of the chassis, and a shipping wedge removably coupled to the staple cartridge body and at least partially covering a tissue-contacting surface of the staple cartridge body. The shipping wedge has a machine-readable medium thereon that stores a characteristic of the staple cartridge body.

An end effector usable with a surgical instrument includes a first jaw pivotably coupled to a second jaw. The first jaw includes staple forming depressions. A staple cartridge is releasably attachable to a channel of the second jaw. A plurality of staples is disposed in the staple cartridge. A shipping wedge is releasably attached to the staple cartridge. The shipping wedge maintains the staples in their respective retention slots and is usable to separate the staple cartridge from the channel of the second jaw.

A staple cartridge assembly of a surgical stapler includes a chassis defining an elongate channel therein, a first electrical connector coupled to the chassis, a staple cartridge body configured for removable receipt in the elongate channel of the chassis, and a second electrical connector coupled to the staple cartridge body and having a memory. The memory has stored therein a parameter of the staple cartridge body. The first and second electrical connectors are configured to matingly engage one another upon receipt of the staple cartridge body in the elongate channel of the chassis.

A surgical stapler comprising a handle assembly, an elongated body portion extending distally from the handle assembly, and a head portion disposed adjacent a distal portion of the elongated body portion and including an anvil assembly and a shell assembly. The anvil assembly has an anvil head and a plurality of projections extending proximally of the anvil head, the projections engageable with a portion of the shell assembly.

A surgical grasping instrument is provided which includes a body portion having an elongate tubular member extending from the body portion and a jaw assembly movably mounted on a distal end of the elongate tubular member. The jaw assembly includes first and second jaws having arcuate grasping portions for securely grasping a circular surgical stapler anvil shaft. The jaw assembly is mounted on a movable head portion which is movable relative to a longitudinal axis of the elongate tubular member to rotate and articulate the jaw assembly relative to the longitudinal axis to manipulate the anvil within the body of a patient.
