The present invention relates to formulated lubricant oils derived from a highly paraffinic basestock. The lubricating oils of the present invention achieve the extremely stringent viscosity requirements of SAE '0W' crossgraded engine oils and demonstrate an excellent combination of low-temperature performance and biodegradability not achievable by other formulations derived from other classes of basestocks.

Formulated lubricant oils containing high-performance base oils derived from highly paraffinic hydrocarbons

Novel oil-in-oil emulsions and methods of lubrication using the same are provided. The lubricants are stable emulsions of carrier fluid and high viscosity fluid that display superior properties related to lubricating film thickness and reduced shear strength.

Oil-in-oil emulsion lubricants for enhanced lubrication

Lubricant oils of low pour point and improved oxidation stability are produced by catalytically dewaxing a lube feedstock over a zeolite dewaxing catalyst such as ZSM-5 in the hydrogen or decationized form. The use of these catalysts enables products of excellent oxidative stability to be obtained and reduces the catalyst aging rate in the first and subsequent dewaxing cycles to values below 5&deg; F./day. The duration of the dewaxing cycles may be extended, particularly in the second and subsequent cycles after hydrogen reactivation.

Catalytic dewaxing process for producing lubricating oils

When different trialkyl methanes containing 25 through 36 carbon atoms are mixed the mixture exhibits surprisingly superior lubricant properties including low viscosity, high VI, low volatility, very low pour point and a dynamic viscosity at low temperatures that is less than those of PAO lubricants. Raffinate is catalytically hydrodewaxed to lube basestock in a mixture containing between 0.01 and 1 weight percent of pour point depressants comprising the copolymer residue of a mixture of 1-alkene comonomers selected from the group consisting of C.sub.3 -C.sub.28 1-alkenes. The mixture is contacted with hydrogen and shape selective metallosilicate catalyst particles under mild hydrodewaxing conditions to produce an increased yield of lube basestock having a pour point below -25.degree. A process for making a lubricant oil of low pour point which comprises a) catalytically dewaxing a lube boiling range feedstock in the presence of hydrogen over a dewaxing catalyst comprising an intermediate pore size zeolite in the hydrogen or decationized form during a dewaxing cycle in which the temperature is progressively increased to maintain a substantially constant product pour point to produce a lubricant oil product of improved oxidation stability. The feedstock is sequenced during a dewaxing cycle from a heavy feed to a lighter feed in order to avoid contacting the lighter feed with the catalyst in its most active conditions.

Thermal treatment of heavy petroleum resid in the presence of moderate amounts of light aromatics or paraffins produces more liquid product at the expense of gas and coke than when treated alone under identical conditions.

Thermal treatment of petroleum residua with alkylaromatic or paraffinic

A process for making a lubricant oil of low pour point and improved oxidation stability by catalytically hydro-dewaxing a lube chargestock containing paraffin wax in a vertical column reactor having a cascade series of fixed downflow catalyst beds over dewaxing catalyst comprising acid medium pore size zeolite. The treatment is carried out by selectively hydrodewaxing paraffinic wax contained in the liquid petroleum in a first serial catalyst bed under adiabatic cracking temperature conditions while controlling adiabatic exothermal heat of reaction within a 30.degree. C. maximum excursion from the initial reaction temperature, thereby producing lighter olefinic components, recovering partially hydrodewaxed liquid petroleum from a bottom portion of the first serial catalyst bed, and redistributing said partially hydrodewaxed liquid petroleum for contact with said catalyst in at least one downstream fixed catalyst bed. The partially hydrocracked liquid petroleum is further reacted to effect endothermic hydrodewaxing concurrently with exothermic hydrogen transfer, dewaxing, hydrogenation and cyclization in the presence of hydrogen under adiabatic temperature conditions, permitting net exothermic reaction temperature to rise not more than 30.degree. C. in said downstream catalyst bed. Temperature control is maintained by injecting hydrogen quench fluid into at least one downstream catalyst bed concurrently with partially hydrodewaxed liquid petroleum to decrease reaction temperature, thereby maintaining a maximum temperature excursion of about 30.degree. C. throughout said series of fixed catalyst beds and controlling uniform hydro-dewaxing conditions to obtain high quality petroleum lubricant product.

Catalytic dewaxing process

A process is disclosed for the preparation of low viscosity lubricant range hydrocarbons having high viscosity index which comprises: contacting olefinic dimer, or mixtures thereof, with a Group 6 metal oxide disproportionation catalyst on a solid support under disproportionation reaction conditions. The dimer comprises the product of the oligomerization of C.sub.6 -C.sub.20 alpha-olefins in contact with reduced chromium oxide catalyst on silica support. The disproportionation catalyst preparation includes treatment by oxidation at a temperature of 200.degree. C. to 900.degree. C. in the presence of an oxidizing gas and then treatment with a reducing agent at a temperature and a time sufficient to reduce said catalyst. The disproportionation reaction effluent is separated and lubricant range hydrocarbons recovered. The preferred disproportionation catalyst for the process is reduced tungsten oxide on silica support. It has been found that the instant invention produces a novel lubricant composition which comprises the mono-olefinic bimolecular adduct of C.sub.12 -C.sub.40 mono-olefin hydrocarbons. The adduct contains between 2n-2 and 2n-(n/2+3) carbon atoms, where n is the number of carbon atoms in said C.sub.12 -C.sub.40 mono-olefins hydrocarbons. A preferred mono-olefin hydrocarbon is the dimer of 1-decene.

Conversion of alpha-olefin dimer to liquid lubricant basestock

It is disclosed that aromatic compounds can be alkylated with mono-olefinic HVI-PAO dimer in contact with an acidic catalyst to produce novel alkylated aromatic compositions. It has been found that the novel HVI-PAO dimer alkylated aromatic compositions exhibit an extraordinary combination of properties relating to low viscosity with high viscosity index and low pour point which renders them very useful as lubricant basestock. Further, it has been found that the novel alkylaromatic compositions of the present invention show improved oxidative stability. Depending upon the substituent groups on the aromatic nucleus, useful lubricant additives can be prepared for improved antiwear, antioxidant and other properties. HVI-PAO dimer is prepared as a product or by-product from 1-alkene oligomerization using reduced chromium oxide on solid support.

Alkylaromatic lubricants from alpha-olefin dimer

Alkylphenol lubricants from alpha-olefin dimer

Bicyclic and monocyclic terpenes are oligomerized by contact over a zeolite catalyst to produce high boiling lube oil traction fluid having a high traction coefficient. The traction fluid comprises dimers, trimers and tetramers of the bicyclic and monocyclic terpenes. The lube oil is catalytically hydrogenated to obtain a saturated cycloparaffin hydrocarbon oil traction fluid.
