In a residential environment with more than one analog television set a residential gateway has a network interface module which receives signals from a telecommunications network. The signals contain compressed digital video information which is routed within the gateway to a video module for the generation of an analog video signal for a television set located near the residential gateway, and to a wireless module for transmission to a remote receiver using spread spectrum communications.

A terminal for interconnecting a large number of subscriber telephone circuits with a large bandwidth fiber optic transmission system. A system backplane includes a large number of connectors that each can receive a subscriber printed circuit card which is connectable to subscriber telephone equipment. Each connector is connected to several separate communication buses that each carry a number of communication channels from the fiber optic system, but a primary bus position of each connector is connected to a single, unique bus. This allows each card to have a dedicated bus for up to the number of communication channels of the bus, with additional channel capacity available from primary buses of other connectors, if necessary.

A microprocessor controls the first and second video processors by sending control signals across a control bus.

Unified access platform for simultaneously delivering voice and cell-based services

A method and apparatus for providing analog telephony services over a digital subscriber loop access system is presented. Digital subscriber loop technologies including Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Loop (ADSL) leave existing POTs services undisturbed by utilizing spectrum above the POTs band for data services. An Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) cell mapping is utilized on an ADSL linecard which permits flexible mapping of compressed or uncompressed voice signals into ATM cells along with overhead and signaling channels. Echo cancellation is used to enhance the voice quality in compressed voice signals. The ATM cells can be transmitted to a subscriber residence or a business and one to four additional analog telephony lines supported a receiving units, in addition to data services. This allows the first telephone line to be operated in the traditional manner as an analog connection over the twisted wire pair, data services provided in the ADSL connection, and additional phone lines to be supported without the installation of more twisted wire pair connections to the residence or business.

Method and apparatus for the generation of analog telephone signals in digital subscriber line access systems

A fiber to the curb communication system providing telephone service to subscribers using line cards which are pluggable into a broadband network unit. The line cards provide telephone service to up to six lines per card. The cards are programmable from a central location, and the system includes self-testing of the cards, ring generator testing and provides for testing of the telephone lines from the system to the subscriber's location.

Method and apparatus for reliable operation of universal voice grade

A cell grant mechanism is presented which allows a central device to control the transmission of cells from one or more remote devices connected to the central device over a physical medium. Grants are issued from a grant table in the central device to allow remote devices to transmit cells to the central device. The spacing of the grants are optimized to minimize cell delay variation. When there are unused cell opportunities, central device can issue grants to devices to utilize the unused cell opportunities on an available bit rate basis.

Cell grant mechanism

In an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) communications network which operates over a shared media a method of addressing and access control between a central transceiver and multiple transceivers in a residence is required. A device identifier is placed in the in the Generic Flow Control (GFC) field of the ATM cells to indicate that cells are designated for a particular transceiver or transceivers in the residence. In the reverse direction, transceivers in the residence use the GFC field to indicate that they are attempting to sign onto the network. The GFC bits are returned to zero prior to passing the ATM cells to the ATM processing layer.

FTTC interface circuitry as a physical layer entity

Digital data is transported bidirectionally between a broadband network unit and devices. The data is transmitted in a series of frame intervals that include request slots and cell slots for transmission of ATM data. The request slots may be used by a device to request one or more cell slots. The broadband network unit determines which requests to grant. If the request is granted, the device may use the cell slot to transmit ATM data. In addition, the request slot can accommodate Time Division Multiplex data such as digital telephony.

System, method, and apparatus for bidirectional transport of digital

A communications terminal interfaces a large number of potential individual telephone subscriber channels with a wide bandwidth, time multiplexed fiber optic or other type of trunk line. A time slot interchanger within the terminal assigns each of the subscriber channel time slots to one of the time slots in the trunk line signal. Data of the individual time slots of a frame of data of all channels is sequentially stored in a random access memory and then read out in a different sequence. A uniquely addressed location is provided in the memory for data of each individual channel. For cases where all channels are not being utilized, the system omits reading and/or writing data into the corresponding memory data locations not being used, thus saving power.
