A self powered lock is powered by a manually driven generator. The data input to the lock is entered by rotating the dial and stopping and waiting a predetermined amount of time when a desired number is displayed on the lock display. The drive of the power generator, a stepper motor, is through a unidirectional clutch, such that the generator is only driven when the dial is rotated in a selected direction and remains stationary when the dial is rotated in the opposite direction. The data input, including entry of the combination, to the lock is provided by a stepper motor which generates a train of electrical pulses. The electrical pulses are used by the electronic controls of the lock to control the electronic controls including entering the combination. The data input pulses are generated by a stepper motor driven to act as a generator. The data input generator is similarly driven through a unidirectional clutch and is driven only when the dial is being rotated in a direction opposite the direction in which the power generator is driven. Accordingly, only the power generator or the data input generator is driven at any one time, depending upon the direction of rotation of the dial. A third unidirectional clutch is used to grasp the shaft of the data input stepper motor, preventing the reverse rotation of the rotor when the dial of the lock is rotated to generate operating power.

A gear driven bolt withdrawal mechanism for an electronic lock is disclosed wherein an electromagnetic device such as an electromagnetic device displaces a partial gear into a position to be engaged by a manual drive. The partial gear, in turn, drives subsequent gears in a gear train to engage a gear with teeth on a rack attached to or a part of the bolt of the lock. The restoration of the bolt is ensured by a physical engagement between a portion of the drive cam and a portion of the bolt to force the bolt to its extended position upon locking; a displaceable slide is disposed in blocking relationship to the bolt whenever the bolt is fully extended to prevent end pressure from displacing the bolt without entry of a valid combination into the electronic controls of the lock.

Interlocks are described that prevent the bolt of a bolt lock from being displaced to the unlocked position by the use of impact and inertial of the lock parts, heat and the displacement of the cover plate of the lock housing.

Anti-attack interlocks for a combination lock mechanism

A combination lock/deadbolt is connected to a push-to-open panic-bar device to operate in response to push-bar operation, thereby withdrawing both the push-bar latchbolt and the deadbolt permitting instantaneous and unrestricted egress from a secured area. To maintain the security of the area from unauthorized entry from outside the secured area, a connection between the push-to-open device and the combination lock/deadbolt assembly is implemented with a lost motion connection. The lost motion device, preferably is a flexible cable transmitting force only in tension, assures that any operation of the combination lock/deadbolt will not effect the security provided by the push-to-open device. Further, the push-to-open device may be provided both with a conventional key cylinder lock and a knob, ever, or thumb lever release on the door exterior. Opening action initiated from outside the door through the knob lever or thumb lever release is mechanically segregated from the cable connection to the combination lock/deadbolt, preventing operation of the push-to-open device from the outside causing operation of the combination lock/deadbolt assembly. Accordingly, an authorized individual must have both a key for the key cylinder lock and the authorized combination for the combination lock in order to gain entry to the secured area, yet anyone may exit the secured area without any restrictions or delay merely by pushing the push-to-open bar.

High security push-to-exit pedestrian door control

A combination lock/deadbolt assembly connection technique is disclosed for connecting the bolt of the combination lock to the deadbolt of the deadbolt assembly to provide a lost motion connection while at the same time to retain the ability to position a magnetic anti-attack interlock within the bolt of the combination lock. A connecting shaft is disposed between the bolt and the deadbolt and a spring bias force introduced between the two bolts. The shaft may be attached rigidly at one end to either the lock bolt or deadbolt. The opposite end is loosely attached by retaining rings or retaining rings to accommodate the movement of the loosely attached bolt with respect to the shaft thereby providing a lost motion connection. A compression spring is disposed intermediate to the lock bolt and the deadbolt to provide a separating or extending force. The connection constitutes a lost motion connection to permit either the withdrawal of the deadbolt without withdrawal of the lock bolt or extension of the lock bolt without requiring extension of the deadbolt.

A bolt retraction mechanism is descrbied that is enabled by an electronic signal to a stepper motor which causes the lock to be openable. The lock is internally powered by a generator operable by the operator. The operation of the generator is separate from the lock operations.
