A method for removing defects at high pressure and high temperature (HP/HT) or for relieving strain in a non-diamond crystal commences by providing a crystal, which contains defects, and a pressure medium. The crystal and the pressure medium are disposed in a high pressure cell and placed in a high pressure apparatus, for processing under reaction conditions of sufficiently high pressure and high temperature for a time adequate for one or more of removing defects or relieving strain in the single crystal.

Method for reducing defect concentration in crystals

The present invention is directed to a method for changing the color of colored natural diamonds. The method includes placing a discolored natural diamond in a pressure-transmitting medium which is consolidated into a pill. Next, the pill is placed into a high pressure/high temperature (HP/HT) press at elevated pressure and elevated temperature for a time sufficient to improve the color of the diamond. The diamond may be exposed at elevated-pressure and elevated-temperature conditions within the graphite-stable region of the carbon-phase diagram&#x2014;without significant graphitization of the diamond, or above the diamond-graphite equilibrium and within the diamond-stable region of the carbon-phase diagram. Finally, the diamond is recovered from said press. Colorless Type Ia and Type II diamonds may be made by this method.

High pressure/high temperature production of colorless and fancy-colored diamonds

The present invention is directed to a method for treating discolored natural diamond, especially Type IIa diamond and Type IaA/B diamond with nitrogen as predominantly B centers, for improving its color. The method includes preblocking and preshaping a discolored natural diamond to prevent its breakage in a high pressure/high temperature (HP/HT) press, placing said discolored natural diamond in a pressure transmitting medium which is consolidated into a pill. Next, the pill is placed into a HP/HT press at elevated pressure and elevated temperature within the graphite-stable or diamond-stable range of the carbon phase diagram for a time sufficient to improve the color of said diamond. Finally, the diamond is recovered from said press. Colorless and fancy colored diamonds can be made by this method.

Method for reducing defect concentrations in crystals

A jadeite material has a thickness in excess of about 1.0 mm and CIELAB indices of L*&#x3e;42, a*&#x3c;&#x2212;6, and b*&#x3e;+6. The grain size of the jadeite material is less than about 30 microns and is an equiaxed grain structure. The jadeite material has an optical transmission peak between 500 and 565 nm with an I/Ioptical transmission ratio of over 40%. The first step in making the jadeite material is to wrap a glass block, convertible by HP/HT into jadeite and having a nominal composition of NaAlSiO, with a graphite or refractive metal sheet. The wrapped glass block is placed in an HP/HT apparatus, rapidly heated, and subjected therein to a pressure in excess of about 3 GPa and a temperature in excess of about 1000&#xb0; C. for a time adequate to convert the glass block into jadeite. The jadeite material then is cooled and the pressure subsequently released.

Jadeite and its production

An element-doped diamond crystal is disclosed herein. The crystal includes at least one dopant element which has a greater concentration toward or near an outermost surface of the crystal than in the center of the crystal. The concentration of the dopant element is at a local minimum at least about 5 micrometers below the surface. The concentration-profile of the dopant element for these diamond crystals causes an expansion of the diamond lattice, thereby generating tangential compressive stresses at the surface of the diamond crystal. These stresses beneficially increase the compressive fracture strength of the diamond.

Surface impurity-enriched diamond and method of making

The present invention is directed to a method for changing the color of colored natural diamonds. The method includes placing a discolored natural diamond in a pressure-transmitting medium which is consolidated into a pill. Next, the pill is placed into a high pressure/high temperature (HP/HT) press at elevated pressure and elevated temperature for a time sufficient to improve the color of the diamond. The diamond may be exposed at elevated-pressure and elevated-temperature conditions within the graphite-stable region of the carbon-phase diagram&mdash;without significant graphitization of the diamond, or above the diamond-graphite equilibrium and within the diamond-stable region of the carbon-phase diagram. Finally, the diamond is recovered from said press. Colorless Type Ia and Type II diamonds may be made by this method.

A method for detecting whether a natural diamond has been processed at high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) conditions comprises steps of disposing the diamond in a cyrostat that is provided at temperatures equal to or less than liquid nitrogen; illuminating the diamond with a laser beam; recording an optical spectrum of the diamond with a photoluminescence spectrometer; and examining the optical spectrum of the diamond to detect an absence of selected photoluminescent spectral lines. The invention also sets forth a method for predicting whether a natural diamond has been treated under HPHT conditions

Method of detection of natural diamonds that have been processed at high pressure and high temperatures

A method for treating diamond for improving the oxidation resistance and the mechanical strength of said diamond crystals includes forming a mixture of diamond crystals, a source of boron, and inert particles. This mixture is heated at a temperature of between about 800&deg; and 1200&deg; C. for a time adequate to diffuse boron into the surface of the diamond crystals for improving the oxidation resistance and the mechanical strength of the boron-diffused diamond crystals. The resulting diamond crystals have improved oxidation resistance and improved mechanical strength by virtue of having had boron thermally diffused into the surface of thereof.

An improved method of producing a diamond tube by chemical vapor deposition and a hollow support mandrel used therein. The method comprises depositing a diamond film on an outer side of the hollow mandrel by the CVD process. The mandrel is then etched away by subjecting an inner side of the mandrel to the etching action. It was unexpectedly discovered that the etch time is drastically reduced by using the hollow mandrels.

A system for treating a prostate includes an acoustic carrier, a phase fresnel zone in a section of the acoustic carrier, and an acoustic transducer. The phase fresnel zone is formed in the acoustic carrier adjacent a first end of the acoustic carrier and extends at least partially around the outer surface of the acoustic carrier. An acoustic transducer is coupled to a second end of the acoustic carrier. In treating the prostate, which surrounds a urethra, the acoustic carrier is inserted into the urethra and positioned so that the phase fresnel zone is situated in a region of the urethra surrounded by the prostate. Acoustic waves are transmitted into the second end of the acoustic carrier and the phase fresnel zone focuses the acoustic waves to constructively interfere at the location in the prostate. By moving the acoustic carrier, the phase fresnel zone may be moved along at least a portion of the region of the urethra surrounded by the prostate while the acoustic waves are being transmitted.
