A PON system comprising multiple PONs, each having a respective intelligent splitter monitor (ISM). In addition to having a passive optical splitter therein, an ISM also has several remotely powered active components configured to monitor the presence of uplink light signals on the ports of the splitter and communicate with the central office using out-of-band optical signals. These ISM functionalities enable the network operator, e.g., to automatically map PON connectivity, pairing each port on the splitter with a distinct optical network unit. The PON system further comprises an optical module connected to the multiple PONs through an optical switch in a manner that supports shared access to said module by the corresponding multiple ISMs. In an example embodiment, the optical module comprises an optical transceiver capable of communicating with the ISM transceivers and one or more lasers configured to provide high-intensity light for remotely charging the ISM batteries.

Monitoring multiple passive optical networks

The network comprises a plurality of optical line terminals which communicate with a plurality of optical network units over an optical distribution network. The optical distribution network includes a plurality of optical filters controlled by a network controller. A first optical line terminal sends a request for optical communication with at least one optical network unit to the network controller. The request is sent over the optical distribution network and indicates an operating wavelength of the first optical line terminal and of the at least one optical network unit. The network controller configures at least two of the optical filters to allow a passing through of the operating wavelength or of a further operating wavelength. The optical communication between the first optical line terminal and the at least one optical network unit in the operating or in the further operating wavelength is established through the optical filters.

The laser assembly includes a semiconductor with an active semiconductor region, a controllable oscillator for generating a periodic electric signal that is applied to the semiconductor laser to generate a surface acoustic wave in or near the active semiconductor region such that a diffraction grating structure is created in or near the active semiconductor region by the surface acoustic wave, an emission wavelength of the active semiconductor region being determined by a periodicity of the diffraction grating structure, wherein the controllable oscillator is configured to set a frequency of the periodic electric signal in accordance with a control signal, and a control circuit for generating the control signal for the controllable oscillator in such a manner that a shift of the emission wavelength from heating of the active semiconductor region during emission of the optical signal is at least partially compensated by an opposite shift of the emission wavelength from a change of the periodicity of the diffraction grating structure in or near the active semiconductor region.

Method and apparatuses for performing network functions in a passive optical network

In one embodiment, a media access controller includes first and second optical line terminals with a receiver for adjacent first and second wavelength ranges, respectively, and an optical network unit with a transmitter having a transmitter wavelength which drifts between the first and the second wavelength range. The media access controller is configured to assign the optical network unit to the first and the second optical line terminals, such that an optical burst transmitted by the optical network unit is received by the first optical line terminal and the second optical line terminal. The media access controller is configured to determine first and second qualities of the optical burst received by the first and second optical line terminals, respectively, and to determine an estimate of the transmitter wavelength based on the first quality and the second quality.

The invention relates to a method for monitoring a passive optical network having a tree-like structure with a main line and a plurality of branches. The method includes transmitting a wake-up signal from an optical line termination (OLT) arranged in the main line to a plurality of monitoring units arranged in the branches. The method also includes detecting the wake-up signal and listening to information requests from the OLT in the monitoring units during a listening time interval after the detection of the wake-up signal. The method further includes transmitting an information request to be received in the listening time interval from the OLT to the monitoring units. The method additionally includes receiving the information request in the monitoring units during the listening time interval, one of the monitoring units which is addressed by the information request transmitting a response message back to the OLT.

The invention concerns a transceiver module for an optical data network, comprising an optical interface for connection with an optical transmission line and an electrical interface for connection with a host board, wherein the electrical interface is suitable for providing the transceiver module with payload data to be sent on the optical transmission line and for providing the host board with payload data read from the optical transmission line, and further comprising monitoring means for monitoring the optical transmission line, which the transceiver module comprises an analyzing means for processing measuring data provided by the monitoring means in a statistical manner, and where the analyzing means is connected to the electrical interface for providing processed measuring data to the electrical interface. The inventive transceiver module is easy to install, and only a small amount of monitoring data needs to be transferred.

Passive optical networks are generally built from a central office and a plurality of passive optical nodes. Over a main path, optical signals are transmitted to the nodes. When a fault, e.g. a cable break, occurs on the main path, the optical signals are transmitted to the nodes over a reserve path. When the fault has been removed, switchback to the main path is effected and the optical signals are again transmitted to the nodes over the main path. The device according to the invention is particularly characterized in that an additional optical signal is provided which is transmitted at a wavelength outside the wavelength range used for the transmission of useful optical signals over the main path, and which is used to power an electric circuit within the device which, in turn, controls a switch that switches between main path and reserve path.

It is an object of the invention to provide a network topology for OCDM signals. Coding splitters combining both coding and splitting functions are provided. The coding splitters themselves can be made from cascaded Mach Zehnder filters which are located somewhere in the network and which can be integrated using planar waveguide technologies. Each OCDM transceiver as well as the network is connected to the splitter via a pair of fibers for the two transmission directions. This set-up has the advantage that the same splitter can be used for both directions to and from the transceivers on one side and to and from the network on the other side.

A receiver (EMP , . . . , EMPn) is disclosed for receiving optical signals from an optical transmission network (NET) serving to transmit coded, multiplexed optical signals. The receiver (EMP , . . . , EMPn) includes a means (DEK ) for detecting the optical signals to be received, e.g., a Fabry-Perot filter, and processing means (O/E1, 0/E2, 5) to compensate noise present in the detected optical signals by combining the detected optical signals with compensation signals. The means (DEK ) is adapted to transmit optical signals to be received and reflect optical signals not to be received. A further means (K ), e.g., an optical coupler, is provided for deriving the compensation signals from at least part of the reflected optical signals and then applying the compensation signals to the processing means (O/E1, O/E2, 5). The receiver has the advantage that the signal to be received is not contained, or is contained only minimally, in the compensation signal, so that it does not affect, or affects only insignificantly,the degree of compensation when being combined with the detected signal.
