A decoring method and system is provided. The method includes the steps of providing the casting having a core material disposed in the internal passage; providing the decoring apparatus configured to selectively oscillate the casting and selectively rotate the casting; securing the casting in the decoring apparatus; introducing a quantity of shot into the internal passage of the casting; oscillating the casting; and rotating the casting. A decoring apparatus configured to selectively oscillate the casting along a first axis, rotate the casting about a second axis, and rotate the casting about a third axis, is also provided.

Method and system for internal cleaning of complex castings

A sheath including a hollow main body having a first end with an opening formed therein. The hollow main body is formed from a substantially nonmagnetic material and adapted to receive the permanent magnet material handling device. The sheath militates against an attraction of foreign material to the permanent magnet material handling device when not in use. An engine block mold package includes a barrel crankcase core having a plurality of barrels on an integral crankcase region and one or more locator surfaces on the crankcase region. The barrels are formed by a barrel-forming tool element of a core box. The barrel-forming tool element is configured to also form the locator surface(s) on the crankcase region such that the locator surface(s) is/are accurately positioned relative to the barrels and thus the cylinders formed in the engine block cast in the mold package. The locator surface(s) can be used to locate the engine block casting in subsequent aligning and machining operations without the need to reference a curved surface of a cylinder bore liner.

Casting of engine blocks

Molten metal is differential pressure, countergravity cast into a casting mold having a heat conductive chill meter disposed in the ingate to the mold cavity. The chill member accelerates solidification of a plug of the metal in the ingate in the vicinity of the chill member after the mold cavity is filled with molten metal. The plug prevents run-out of molten metal from the mold cavity when the ingate and an underlying molten metal source are disengaged after casting. Accelerated solidification of the plug in the ingate permits early disengagement of the ingate and the molten metal source to shorten casting cycle time.
