A photovoltaic device having (i) an outer transparent casing, (ii) a substrate, the substrate and the outer transparent casing defining an inner volume, (iii) at least one solar cell on the substrate, (iv) a filler layer sealing the at least one solar cell and (v) a container within the inner volume is provided. The container decreases in volume when the filler layer expands, and increases in volume when the filler layer contracts. In some instances, the container is sealed and has a plurality of ridges. In some instances, the container has an opening that is sealed by a spring loaded seal. In some instances, the container has a first opening and a second opening, where the first opening is sealed by a first spring loaded seal and the second opening is sealed by a second spring loaded seal. In some instances, the container has an elongated asteroid shape.

Volume compensation within a photovoltaic device

Tapes ( ), such as magnetic, optic and other recording tapes, and many other kinds of tapes having opposite edges ( ), are wound into an increasing tape pack ( ) about an axis of rotation ( ) by floating substantially each newly arriving tape winding ( ) on a fluid film ( ) on the increasing tape pack. Opposite edges of substantially each new winding of the tape are continuously aligned for a number of turns ( ) with corresponding edges of substantially all preceding windings of tape in the increasing tape pack with the aid of that fluid film. Increments of that fluid film between the turns are gradually diminished to zero until each leading turn of such number of turns has become locked to a remainder of the tape pack. Resulting packs ( ) of wound tape are substantially fluid-free and co-planar along opposite radial planes ( ) of the tape pack.

High speed tape packing

A pupil function analyzer has three major subsystems; an electro-optical system, an electronic interface system and a computer/software system. The electro-optical system can, in turn, be described in terms of three subsystems; one that delivers controlled lights to the patient's eyes, another that forms images of the two pupils on a video camera, and a third that moves the optics to maintain alignment with the patient's eyes. The electronic interface system converts signals from the video camera into digital signals to be read by the computer and also responds to the computer to move motors for the maintenance of optical alignment and also operates the light stimuli. The computer/software saves and analyzes the signals sent by the electronic interface, controls the alignment motors, and provides an operator interface, so that the operator can select tests and examine the results.

Positioning system for pupil imaging optics

To damp a stepper motor powered band drive for a disk drive, there is a relatively inexpensive, but efficient mechanical damper comprising a predetermined inertial mass which is concentrically coupled to the capstan of the band drive by an energy absorbing elastomer. The mass, its geometry, and the energy absorbing characteristics of the elastomer are selected to apply a dynamic force to the stepper motor which opposes and counteracts any unwanted oscillation of the stepper motor as the read/write head of the disk drive arrives at a selected data track. This damper is relatively free of potential contaminants and is, therefore, particularly attractive for Winchester disk drives.

Mechanical damper for disk drives having band drive actuators

An internal pass-through air filtration system for a rotating memory having a recirculating air flow, such as a Winchester-type disk drive, uses a bipolar electrostatic filtering medium having a 0.3 micron filtering efficiency of approximately 50%-80%. An 'electret' medium is preferred. Advantageously, the electret medium is pleated accordian-style to increase its mechanical strength and to reduce its projected area, thereby enabling it to be frictionally or otherwise seated in a relatively compact air filtration system, without the use of a supporting framework.
