Integrated processes are disclosed for the catalytic conversion of carbohydrate to ethylene glycol and/or propylene glycol using a homogeneous, tungsten-containing retro-aldol catalyst. In these processes, the carbohydrate is subjected to retro-aldol conversion and hydrogenation to provide a reaction product containing ethylene glycol and/or propylene glycol, other reaction process including organic acids, itols and tungsten species. Ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are separated from the reaction product for purification, and at least a portion of the remaining fraction is subjected to ion exclusion chromatography to provide an eluant containing tungsten species and a subsequent eluant containing organic acids and a substantially reduced concentration of tungsten species. At least a portion of the eluant containing tungsten species can be recycled for reuse directly or with intervening unit operations to enhance the catalytic activity of the tungsten species. The organic-containing fraction can be subjected to one or more unit operations to provide salable products or subjected to selective hydrogenolysis to lower glycols.

Methods of forming lignin prepolymers are provided. In an embodiment, such a method comprises adding an acid to an ozonized reaction mixture, the ozonized reaction mixture comprising ozonized lignin having a backbone, and aromatic monomers cleaved from a lignin, under conditions to react the cleaved aromatic monomers with the backbone of the ozonized lignin to form a lignin prepolymer. The methods may further comprise using the lignin prepolymer to form a lignin resin.

Described herein is a method of adjusting the composition of a chromatography product to achieve a target enriched proportion of a desired component from an input feed having a lower proportion of the desired component using simulated moving bed ('SMB') chromatography wherein the eluent for the SMB apparatus may comprise the very input feed being enriched. The method is exemplified by enriching a high fructose corn syrup from a 42% fructose syrup to a 55% fructose syrup without substantially reducing the dissolved solids concentration of the 55% syrup relative to the input 42% syrup. The 42% syrup is also used as the eluent for the SMB apparatus and may be reconstituted from the raffinate stream by passing the raffinate stream over a glucose isomerase column alone or in combination with a dextrose feed. The method reduces water usage and saves energy by minimizing the need for evaporation to obtain a 55% fructose syrup with a high dissolved solids content.

Method for adjusting the composition of chromatography products

A process is described for making acrylic acid from dextrose, which comprises fermenting dextrose; removing solids from the resulting fermentation broth; removing lactic acid from the clarified broth by extraction into an organic solvent; separating out the lactic acid-loaded organic solvent while recycling at least a portion of the remainder back to the fermentation step; reacting the lactic acid with ammonia to provide a dehydration feed comprising ammonium lactate while preferably recycling the organic solvent; carrying out a vapor phase dehydration of the ammonium lactate to produce a crude acrylic acid product; and purifying the crude acrylic acid by distillation followed by melt crystallization, chromatography or both melt crystallization and chromatography.

One class of fusion proteins that is useful in industrial settings are fusions that contain concatemers of target binding domains, which increases the binding equivalents per molecule.

Anhydrous methods of fractionating corn grain that do not require the use of water but rather depends on use of organic solvents are described. The methods include contacting whole grain corn flour with a at least one organic solvent selected from the group consisting of a C1-C6 alcohol, ketone, ester or furan to form an admixture having no more than 15% w/w water. The admixture is separated into i) a solids fraction enriched with corn fiber and protein and 2) a liquid organic slurry comprising suspended starch, dissolved corn oil and the organic solvent. The starch is separated from the first organic slurry to obtain a solvent extracted solid starch fraction and a clarified organic solution. The clarified organic solution which contains dissolved oils is retained and may be evaporated to obtain corn oil that can be further refined.

Anhydrous corn processing

A process is provided for chromatographically separating propionic acid from acrylic acid. By means of the inventive process, a reduced propionic acid content acrylic acid product is enabled having a propionic acid content comparable to acrylic acid products from the conventional two stage oxidation of propylene, but wherein the acrylic acid has been produced with a higher propionic acid content by alternative methods.

A process for purifying a filtered fermentation broth of succinic acid is described. The process involves separating succinic acid from the other organic acids and salts in a raw filtered broth using a non-functionalized chromatographic resin. The operation can be run either as an isocratic elution to yield free succinic acid, or as a gradient or binary elution to produce succinate salt.

A modification is described of a dry grind process for producing ethanol and other co-products from whole grain, whereby the mash is thermochemically treated by cooking the mash in the presence of an organic acid. The organic acid effectively hydrolyzes both the starch and hemicellulosic components in the milled corn to provide fermentable sugars from both the endosperm and other parts of the kernel, without, however, also producing fermentation-inhibiting levels of other known products of the acid hydrolysis of hemicellulosic materials, such as hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural. Further, the organic acid is able to solubilize both the starch and the more recalcitrant hemicelluloses while only partially hydrolyzing the same, so that most of the starch and hemicelluloses are hydrolyzed to oligomers and the amount of chemically labile and reducing sugars is kept sufficiently low as to also not appreciably interfere with the fermentation to ethanol.

Grain milling process

A process is disclosed for making dehydration products from an aqueous sugars solution including pentoses, hexoses or both, for example, an aqueous high fructose corn syrup solution, or from an aqueous solution of one or more of the alcohols of such pentoses and hexoses, for example, from an aqueous sorbitol solution, by an acid-catalyzed dehydration using substituted sulfonic acids solubilized in the aqueous sugars or sugar alcohols solution.

A method for increasing ozone concentration in a liquid can include: providing a gas having ozone; introducing the ozone-containing gas into a liquid, wherein the liquid and ozone combination has a temperature between about 0.8 and about 1.5 times the critical temperature of ozone; and increasing isothermally, the pressure of the ozone-containing gas above the liquid to about 0.3 to about 5 times the critical pressure of ozone so as to increase the ozone concentration in the liquid. The temperature is expressed in absolute units (Kelvin or Rankin). The method can be used for removing ozone from a gas or for purifying ozone. The liquid having a high ozone concentration can be used for ozonolysis of a substrate.
