The present invention includes fan near vertical incident skywave (NVIS) antennas, communication systems and method of use. Fan NVIS antennas may be configured in either base station or remote station for use with transceivers. Fan NVIS base station antennas may be in configurations of either 3 or 4 dipoles and include waist wires connecting adjacent vertices and skirt wires connecting dipole end points. Fan NVIS remote station antennas may be in a 2-dipole configuration and also include skirt wires connecting adjacent dipole end points.

Small UWB antennas and method of designing the same

A quasi-static antenna design is generated for an electrically small non-symmetric dipole antenna having enclosing surfaces that are not symmetrical with the contours of the dipole arms. The shapes of the enclosing surfaces are predefined. The present invention relates to a method for designing an electrically small antenna, in one embodiment, within an enclosing volume. In a preferred embodiment, the method comprises the steps of designing the electrically small antenna which has a general cross-sectional contour shape of an oblate spheroid from a top load portion to a stem portion below the top load portion. The oblate spheroid contour shape is represented by an antenna dipole moment algorithm which includes a dipole moment term. The method further comprises the steps of controlling the amplitude of the dipole moment term, including adjusting the amplitude of the dipole moment term to independently change the oblate spheroid contour shape, resulting in a change to the electric field outside the enclosing volume and a change to the electric field inside the enclosing volume.

Layered superconductor device and method

The device, a conformal antenna, includes an antenna element directly coupled to a layer of gyrotropic material and means for creating a magnetic field, the magnetic field having a component substantially perpendicular to, and passing through, the layer of gyrotropic material and the antenna element. The gyrotropic material may be at least partially disposed on a ground plane and may comprise a material such as yttrium iron garnet. The means for creating a magnetic field can be located within the layer of gyrotropic material and may comprise at least one external magnet. The reflective metal ground plane can be the outer surface of a vehicle. The antenna element could have a dipole antenna configuration, and can produce a wave that is linearly polarized. The operation of the device may be at or above the resonant frequency of the gyrotropic material.

Methods and apparatuses are described that enable the design of electrically small antennas in terms of their quality factor (Q) performance or other antenna parameter. A desired charge distribution is defined and thereafter the shape of the antenna is generated, based on the corresponding solution of a quasi-static field approximation. A degree of freedom in the shaping of the antenna is incorporated into the quasi-static field approximation, via a dimensional variable. This expression has a solution set containing the minimum Q factor. By selection of an appropriate value of the dimensional variable, antennas with minimum or otherwise tailored Q values can be quickly designed.
