A method and apparatus for providing music information for a wireless CD player is disclosed. The CD player may transmit a substantially unique CD tag to a music information service computer system across a network via a wireless communications protocol. The music information service system then matches the CD tag to music data stored in a database. This music data is then transmitted to the CD player to be displayed to the user.

Method and apparatus for providing music information for a wireless audio player

A normalization for streaming digital audio signals applies a gain factor according to the maximum sample magnitude in a window of samples and compare the gain factor to prior gain factors to adjust the gain factor for the samples in the window of samples. Adaptation of the gain factor with rapid decreases but slow increases avoids saturation but allows quiet passages.

A media player permits multiple compressed media files to be concurrently stored in memory interval to the media player. By concurrently buffering more than one compressed media file at a time, any mechanical disturbance that occurs during the playing of a file or between files will not cause a cessation of audio. Further, skipping ahead or in reverse is advantageously expedited.

An audio player permits compressed or uncompressed audio CDs to be played. The preferred player includes a spindle motor control that causes the CD to be spun at a constant linear velocity that is commensurate with the encoding rate of the file being played. In this manner, the data can be continuously pulled of the CD at just the right rate so that, after being decoded and decompressed, the data can be played. The player also dynamically adjusts its constant linear velocity to the encoding rate of the file being played to permit files on the same disc having different encoding rates to be played.

A method and apparatus for playing compressed audio compact discs in a CD player is provided in which compressed audio data is cached in the local memory of the CD player. If a sufficient amount of compressed audio data is cached in the local memory of the CD player, the CD player can be placed in a reduced power state, reducing the consumption of power by the loader of the CD player. The determination of whether a sufficient amount of compressed audio data is present in the local memory of the CD player is made on the basis of a comparison of the playback time of the unaccessed cached audio and the restart time of the CD player.

A method and apparatus for constructing a file tree in a compact disc player from the file system of a compressed audio CD is disclosed. After determining the target sector for building the file tree of the CD player, the CD player reads into the memory of the CD player the target sector and a number of contiguous sectors following the target sector. After identifying a target sector, the CD player first determines if the target sector is cached in the memory of the CD player. If the target sector is cached in the memory of the CD player, the sector is retrieved from the CD player. If the target sector is not cached in the memory of the CD player, the target sector is retrieved from the file system of the CD, together with a number of sequential contiguous sectors following the target sector.
