A method for manufacturing a sensor element is provided for detecting at least one property of a measuring gas in a measuring gas chamber, in particular for detecting a proportion of a gas component in the measuring gas or a temperature of the measuring gas. The method includes the following steps: providing at least one solid electrolyte which includes at least one functional element; applying, at least in sections, at least one first layer made of a ceramic material to the solid electrolyte, the first layer having a first porosity after the application; and applying, at least in sections, at least one second layer made of a ceramic material, the second layer having a second porosity after the application, and the first layer differing from the second layer with respect to at least one material property. Moreover, a sensor element which is manufacturable according to this method is provided.

Method for manufacturing a solid electrolyte sensor element for detecting at least one property of a measuring gas in a measuring gas chamber, containing two porous ceramic layers

A heating device for a sensor element of a gas sensor, in particular for use in exhaust gas analysis of internal combustion engines, has a heating element, which has an electrical resistor layer. The heating element is electrically insulated from at least one solid electrolyte layer by a layer containing barium and/or strontium and/or calcium. For this purpose, the heating element is embedded in a first insulator, which is adjoined by a second insulator. The first insulator has a higher barium and/or strontium and/or calcium content (expressed in weight percentage) than the second insulator.

Gas sensor heating device insulation

A procedure to calculate the Lambda value with a wideband Lambda sensor of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle is thereby characterized, in that from the measured pumping electricity and the sensitivities of the wideband Lambda sensor as well as the gas concentration ratios, in the lean operation an oxygen concentration and in the rich operation an oxygen deficit are determined and from these respectively a conclusion is drawn about the Lambda value using the Pischinger Formula.

Procedure for the determination of the Lambda values with a broadband Lambda probe

A sensor element is used to detect a physical property of a measuring gas, preferably to determine the oxygen content or the temperature of an exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine. The sensor element contains a first solid electrolyte layer and a second solid electrolyte layer. A first printed conductor and a second printed conductor are provided on opposite sides of the first solid electrolyte layer, the first printed conductor including a first electrode and a feed line to the first electrode, and the second printed conductor including a second electrode and a feed line to the second electrode. A third printed conductor, which includes a third electrode and a feed line to the third electrode, is provided on the second solid electrolyte layer. The second printed conductor is positioned between the third electrode and the first printed conductor.

Sensor element

A gas sensor for detecting at least one physical magnitude of a gas, in particular of exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine, is proposed, which includes a sensor element having an electrochemical cell. The electrochemical cell includes a first solid electrolyte member on which a first electrode and a second electrode are applied. The first and the second electrode are electrically connected by means of the first solid electrolyte member. The first electrode is in contact with the gas. The area of the first electrode is smaller than the area of the second electrode.

Gas sensor

A gas sensor is described for detecting a physical property of a measuring gas, including detecting the oxygen concentration in the measuring gas. The gas sensor includes a sensor element having a diffusion barrier, which is arranged between a first solid electrolyte layer and a second solid electrolyte layer. The diffusion barrier has a necked-down portion, i.e., a concave profile, between the first and the second solid electrolyte layer. Accordingly, a first area, which the diffusion barrier occupies in a plane which lies between the side of the first solid electrolyte layer (facing the diffusion barrier) and the side of the second solid electrolyte layer (facing the diffusion barrier), is smaller than a second area on which the diffusion barrier covers the first or the second solid electrolyte. In order to manufacture the sensor element, a first layer made of a paste containing a pore-forming material is applied onto a blank foil, and after that, a second layer made of a paste containing a pore-forming material is applied.

A passive, high-temperature-resistant resistor element for measuring temperature is provided, the resistor element having an essentially interior insulating layer and two exterior conducting layers of a ceramic composite structure; the conducting layers being connected to one another at the tip of the resistor element; and the ceramic composite structure including trisilicon tetranitride, a metal silicide, and yttrium oxide or trisilicon tetranitride, a metal silicide, and a matrix phase of SiOCN, where x signifies 1&#x2013;2, y signifies 0&#x2013;2, and w signifies 0&#x2013;2. A combination element of this resistor element and a sheathed type glow plug, for example, is also provided.

Passive, high-temperature-resistant resistor element for measuring temperature in passenger and commercial vehicles

A sensor for determining a concentration of gas components in gas mixtures having a first measuring electrode (mixed potential electrode) which has little or no catalytic effect on the establishment of an equilibrium in the gas mixture and a second measuring electrode (equilibrium electrode) which catalyzes the establishment of an equilibrium in the gas mixture as well as a solid electrolyte that is conductive for oxygen ions arranged between the two measuring electrodes, with the two measuring electrodes being exposed to the gas mixture. At least the first measuring electrode () is a cermet electrode, where at least one metal oxide component of the cermet electrode is capable of reversible incorporation of oxygen.

Measuring sensor for the determination of a concentration of gas constituents in gaseous mixtures

An electrochemical gas sensor determining the concentration of oxidizable gas components which has an electrochemical measuring cell having a measuring electrode and a reference electrode. Measuring electrode is made of a material which is not able, or not completely able to catalyze the establishment of gas equilibrium. In addition to the electrochemical measuring cell, at least one electrochemical pumping cell, having at least one inner pumping electrode, is provided, which, together with measuring electrode, is positioned in a measuring gas compartment. Oxygen is pumped into or out of measuring gas compartment by pumping cell, the partial pressure of oxygen in measuring gas compartment being set to a lambda value of &#x2267;1.3.

Oxidizable gas component sensor and method of using the sensor

An electrochemical gas sensor for determining the concentration of gas components in a gas mixture, in particular for determining NOx and HC. The gas sensor includes a first measuring gas space which is connected to the measuring gas, and a second measuring gas space which is connected to the first measuring gas space by a connecting channel. Furthermore, a first electrode and a second electrode, arranged in the first measuring gas space, and at least one third electrode arranged in the second measuring gas space, and at least one fourth electrode are provided. The two measuring gas spaces are arranged in layer planes on top of one another and are separated from one another by at least one oxygen ion conducting layer, the connecting channel passing through the oxygen ion conducting layer.

Electrochemical gas sensor

A method for defining the characteristics of metal electrodes of ceramic sensor elements, where the metal electrodes are deposited as layers and subjected to a subsequent annealing process. The aim is to provide a non-destructive, simple and economical method, capable of being automated, for performing an acceptance test in a specimen-specific manner on the sensor element. In the case of the test procedure proposed here, the quantity and distribution of gold deposited so as to be inaccessible in the protective layer, are indirectly determined. This is done by measuring the layer thickness during manufacturing of an electrode, in a before/after comparison, with the aid of an eddy-current measuring process where the electrode is placed in the magnetic circuit of a coil that is traversed by the flow of a high-frequency a.c. current, and the resulting ostensible inductance of the coil is measured using an LCR measuring unit. The coil can be wired as a resonant circuit with the aid of a capacitor.

Method for defining the characteristics of metal electrodes of ceramic sensor elements

An oxygen sensor for determining the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas flow of an internal combustion engine. The sensor includes an outer electrode exposed to the exhaust side and a reference electrode exposed to the ambient air. In the sensor, a space adjacent to the reference electrode or surrounding the reference electrode has an adsorbing and/or absorbing agent, which is introduced, for example, in a loose powder packing or a multiple pellet packing. Other versions of the novel oxygen sensor also have an oxygen supplying material, such as, for example, Mn-oxide, Ba-oxide and/or Ce-oxide, to help promote combustion of exhaust gas components/pollutants and any residue chemicals left remaining from the sensor manufacturing process.
